928 s4 odometer reading??
looking at a car to purchase and the owner said he doenst think the car has 250k miles but instead the odometer is broken on the first digit. is this a common failure? looking at the car it doesnt appear to have that kind of milage. i guess i could always pony up the money for a carfax.

Best to go by service records and condition.
There is a failure mode where the 100k ticks along with another wrong digit. Most common failure is that the odometer stops. 50k, 150k, and 250k though should be easy to tell from condition. There are more sources for about the same info than a carfax. Cheapest is free in Calif go to DMV and lookup smog history via license or vin, vin is better. |

Do a CARFAX on any car purchase, will tell you mileage at last inspection (for all inspections actually)

this is a know failure mode for the VDO speedos ( the hundred thousands indicator will turn)
as well as the odometer gear failing. Recently there was another 928 with 895K miles for sale by a dealer

I have a cluster for sale with like 50K on it. It will make the car almost new.

Talk to the guys at 928Intl about how often somebody calls asking for a low mileage odometer. Add to that all the ways they stop working, and its pointless to give credence to any odometer reading without documents to support it.
Many states don't record mileage at inspections, so the carfax can have a dozen fairly useless entries. |
