Valuation appreciating?

A quick check of the Haggerty valuation trends seems to indicate new interest an appreciation of the 928. Time to invest in a project? I love my middie 911, but the 928 has always been a draw to me.

my 928 project has been a great experience so far. There are still plenty out there and if you select a good candidate and put your own work into it you might break even. They are not yet to the point where projects have much starting value yet which is good from an everyday hobbyist point of view.

Every year the 928's in the world get older with more mileage, which makes a nice low mileage car more rare, and more valuable. Average cars, not so much.

I would think they are going up in value. The car still looks nice, is more functional than others. They were well built cars. I keep mine as stock as possible, except for the new radio. Mine just turned 70K miles. You can go buy a new Vette or some exotic, pay a ton more. But you can have just as much fun in a 928 at a fraction of the price.

Yeah, I think harbourman is right. I can't believe some of the 5-spds I am seeing at 3-5k running. I'm in it for the wrenching, but the electrical gremlins do scare me. Also I understand spares parts are not priced like 911s.

One for $3K or $4K is probably going to need a lot of work and many $$. Try and find a nice clean one even if you pay a lot more.

+1 to what Harborman said.

Unless you get REALLY lucky a $4k 928 is really a $10K +++ car just to get to what I call "stable" I paid $6 for my 78. I have easily that and more in it so far but I did go a little nutty playing with my interior and putting in a nice sound system. Can't hear anything over the engine in my 911 so I wanted something nice in the 928.

The issue is not that they were poorly built or designed, it's that the 35+ years of POs ignoring the proper maintenance and upkeep makes them a bit of a mess later in life. Exponentially different from AC 911s in comparison. Usually a neglected 911 can be brought to life pretty quick and then you are just chasing little things but a 928 is different. The little things in a 928 are time bombs- literally. Rubber fuel lines that run next to the exhaust manifold is an example. No issue if they have been replaced a few times along the way but you don't get much warning when those go kaput. So basically you have to do damn near everything that was never done or wasn't at least done in the past few years by a good PO in order for the 928 to be "right." But after that is all said and done, it's a wonderful car. It really is. Problem is that I seriously glossed over how long that list of things to do actually is.

If you have never worked on an 928 but are great on your 76s (referring to the OP) you are not going to enjoy this very much at first. I'll give you a small "frustration test" to consider as you look around at potentially buying a 928 with your 911 brain- Next one you see take a casual look at removing and replacing the 8 plugs. :-) Frustration test 2- take a look under at the rear and think about replacing the rear shocks... :-)

Sure none of that's not a problem once you get familiar with it but I'm strictly talking about a comparison between a 911 and a 928. It's a whole new skill set to learn and when you walk around evaluating the car saying to yourself "that's not such a big deal, and that looks like a little fix" know up front that you will kick yourself later for saying that.

YMMV- I'm just speaking from my own personal experience from when I got my 78 928. This is after doing a ground up resto on my 76 including building my own engine and 915. For a while the 928 made me think I shouldn't own tools. I'm over that now though.

Good luck, buy the newest one you can afford and have someone who REALLY knows 928s mechanically have a look.

No offense if you are already a 928 master wrencher. I wasn't.

Oh, the electrical gremlins aren't really as bad as they are made to sound. Most of the time it's just ground point related but you will choke the first time you pull the fuse/relay panel back and see everything going on behind there. It's like a bucket of worms. The vacuum system intertwined with everything is a bit of a pain at first though.

I'm by no means a guru or expert on 928s but I've been eyeballs deep in everything you are asking about since buying mine in November.

Good luck. Pull the trigger, and no, these things are no where near the value of 911s now. But our 911s were no where near the value they are now when we got our 76s either. They were great cars and a lot of fun to drive and build. 928 is no different there. Except the fun to build part at first. Trust me.

Mazing3, great post, thanks.
Harborman, yup that is exactly why I posted!
Co)worker just bought an '86 32V with 5sp. I want to drive it but fear I will be hooked, and I still have to do a glass out paint on the 911!

i'm glad the prices are going up even though i initially bought mine to enjoy and see what all the fuss was about. now all i seem to be doing is fixing this fixing that. now i'm at the stage where nearly 90% has been fixed. all with original Porsche parts. the only thing now is the air con condenser change out and refresh, radio, alloys and the fan control unit needs replacing.

with 95K on the clock what do you think its worth?? im still looking at spending £4000k on her.

If you look at that Hagerty chart, it describes the conditions and value. #1 means show room perfect! So it gets top value. So place your car in the respective condition rating to get an idea of value. Naturally, your local market area has some influence.
