Tempermental 928
I've had my 928 for about 3 months, and it's run with out a hickup until 2 weeks ago. First it's a 1983 S. I drove the car for about 30 minutes, then stopped for about 10 minutes, and the car wouldn't start. Turned over fine, but no light. Came back the next day, and it fired right up no problem. Took it to my mechanic, and he changed plugs, ignition wires, rotor, distridutor cap, and the fuel filter. Drove home no problem. Next day, won't start. Wait a few hours and is starts fine. So assuming that this is all start related, I should have known, I went for a drive, and.... in an inconvient spot the dash lights up, and I coast to a stop. Few hours later it fires right up. So I know that was long winded but, any ideas? I am thinking fuel pump, but is there anything else I can look at.

Diagnosis required here, so you need to either take it to the shop or do it yourself. Firstly you need to find if it's the ignition side or fuel side that's causing the problem.
There are a few things you should change anyway for preventive maintenance; The fuel pump relay 928 615 113 01 and fuel injection relay 928 615 119 00. Clean the fuse panel and ALL the ground connections. Remove the connector from the LH computer and clean them. Make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight and the protector is on the positive terminal so it doesn't short out on the battery compartment cover. There are many parts than can cause this type of failure, including the LH computer and alarm relay. Until you can duplicate and verify which part is causing the problem replacing parts won't cure it.

Bitwrench, thanks for the help. The relay sounds like a promising solution. Cheers.

Check valve
You have a failed check valve in your fuel system. Your engine is warm and expects to have a certan fuel pressure for a certain amount of time. once the engine is cold the fuel supply is suplemented by the cold start injector.
BTW I have owned my car for 12 years. do all the maintenance. you could have done what you paid the mechanic to do in an afternoon. If he was good he would have found your problem easy enough using the shop manual. |
