I’ve been avoiding the fan hub bearing replacement job with the excuse of cleaning out and setting up the garage. I was nervous about pressing out the existing bearing.
Well, looks like I was worried for nothing. The fan is junk: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Definitely a bad bearing! ![]() Good news is I found the fan at Rose Passion for $419 including 2-day shipping and I can return the $180 bearing because the fan comes with it. All in all, not too bad. Reman alternators for this car are not really available at the moment, so while I'm working on the front shocks, I'm going to have a local alt shop rebuild this one before I put is all back together. For kicks I pressed the old bearing out of the old fan for the experience. All went well. I was also able to pull the fan off the alternator without issue. I think I might enjoy this new wrenching hobby. Last edited by almico; 03-12-2023 at 12:24 PM.. |

Wow I’m not sure I’ve seen a fan that looked that bad without actually blowing itself apart. Very fortunate that a blade didn’t let go, that would have been catastrophic!

I feel pretty fortunate that I made it the hour home from the seller. I haven't started the car since it went into the garage a couple of weeks ago. "If it weren't for bad luck"...as the song goes. I'm surprised the bearing pressed out without it disintegrating.

Wow, that fan was really shot. Thankfully you caught this this right away. I’d have a careful look at all the hoses and lines after that find. Reminds me of my car when I first brought it home. The car is lucky to have found you.
That’s a very good deal on the impeller. Do make sure it includes the fan bearing. I seem to recall someone was selling them sans the bearing. Better still, get an RS fan hub. Fan bearings are unnecessary (unless you sit in traffic all day), and prone to failure. |

It's remarkable how clean the rest of the engine bay is. It seems it's only the fan that degraded..odd.

Finally got this car on the road. It spent a couple of weeks in the shop getting the suspension installed and a good going over. It was pretty original so it needed some TLC e.g. MAF sensor, control arms, fuel filter etc.
I also sent my mufflers to Darin Fister for some Stage III work. They are loud and I almost regretted it on the ride home from the shop, but after a few hundred miles in the saddle, they sure sound great. For the suspension I went with Eibach springs and Koni FSDs. Great move. It drives like a slot car and the Eibachs got it to the perfect ride height.
