Can I remove just my tranny?

I'm in disbelief, but a guy on Rennlist (he may be here too) said you can do a 993 clutch R&R without removing the engine. How in the world can this be? I'm dying to know if this is true. If it is, I'll be doing the RS kit much sooner. Please explode this myth or confirm it.

I think a special supporting rig for the engine is used to do the tranny-only drop. I vaguely recall this being discussed on Rennlist a year or so ago.

I've been told several times that on a 2WD 993, you don't need to drop the engine to do tranny work, however, I've never done it myself. The people who tell me this work on 993's.

If you can be patient, I may be doing a tranny swap on my 2WD 993 and using this method...

Hi Richard,
I've done it before on a 964 C2 turbo. It seemed quicker than removing with the engine as there was alot less disconnection work. I guess doing it on a 993 should not be too different.
I did not have a tranny rig but just regular stands seemed to have done the job holding the engine. The gearbox needed to come out at a slight angle downwards. I also loosened the engine mounts beforehand just in case they get damaged.
Getting it out was not difficult. Getting the gearbox back in was a bit harder. A transmission jack helped things but still wasnt easy mating it with the engine because of the alignment of the 4 studs and the shaft, hence using a proper clutch alignment tool is a must.
Good luck.

Wow! I'm amazed. I guess it's almost time for that RS clutch kit then. Did you change the flywheel too? If not, do you know whether that is doable with just a tranny drop? And how long did it take you?

Hi Richard,
As marcesq suggested, the flywheel was doable without difficulty. The job should have taken less than 12 hours for someone not so skilled like myself. However I had to add a few hours on top because I stripped the heads of a clutch cover bolt and a flywheel bolt, which was a real pain in the bottom.
Also remember to replace all bolts and the flywheel seal while you have the chance to.
Regards

I'm kidding. My clutch is fine. When it starts to go, I'll methodically round up parts and docs for this job. You know my life's mantra - if it ain't broke....

I have done that a few Times , it is very easy ,but you need a Tranny Jack .And leave the Clutch slave on the line and unhook it with the 2
13mm nuts from the Tranny . that way you dont have to bleed the cluch .

So do you only need one transmission jack? Or do you need another tall jack to support the engine as well?

Guess what I'm asking is does the engine need to be lowered slightly to let the transmission come out at an angle?

Any detail would be greatly appreciated.

take a woodbeam standing upright ,than you lower the Tranny jack about 4 inches and rest the Engine on the woodbeam .

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the help.
Got my tranny off in about 2.5 hours. I'll post pictures once my entire clutch install is done

Posted this on Rennlist as well, but figured I might get some response from this thread...

My clutch has a sort of on/off feel to it, so I figured a nice winter project would be to remove the transmission (only) and see what kind of shape it's in. I couldn't find specific diy instructions, but it looks fairly straightforward. Thanks to the C4, the tunnel in front of the transmission looks like I've got plenty of room to move the tranny forward (away from the engine) to disengage the input shaft from the clutch. Removing the starter looks challenging, but doable.

I do have one specific question. Do I have to remove the oil line shown below? And if I do, does the oil have to be drained first? If so, I may wait and do this on my oil change cycle next summer -- there's $40 worth of Mobil 1 from July in there.

Thanks,

Chris.

Chris- No need to remove the line. It actually pulls down below the level of the suspension crossmember once the clamp is taken off. Check out my post about the Tilton clutch in the 911 forums. There is a write up I just did about the tranny drop.
