Question Fan and Temp control knobs

Does anyone know how the Fan and Temp control knobs come off? Do they just pull off of the stem or do they have something holding them on. I trid to pull them straight off but they don't budge and I am afraid to pull to hard and break them if they are held on by something.

I just needed to replace the A/C switch in the CCU of my '89 C4. To do this I had to take the CCU apart, including removing all the buttons on the front of the unit. All of mine pulled straight off, and were not threaded on or anything like that. I wonder if a PO could have glued your buttons? I noticed that a knob on one of the center sliders was loose, and just placed a little piece of paper in it to tighten its fit. Perhaps your PO went a step further if he had "loose knobs"?

Good luck,
Tom
