Just some information on my tire experience and search for the right tire for my 92 C-2. In the last couple of years I have spent a lot of money searching for an acceptable tire that; had decent grip in dry and wet, ran quiet, rode resonably well, and didn't cost an arm and two legs. I have tried Michilen Pilots, Dunlop SPP Sports, Kohmos, (the worst) and now I have Yokohama AVS 100s. The Yokohamas are by far the best. Can't say too much about wear yet but they are the best in every catagory. My car came with Yoko's when new but they only lasted 8,000 miles and the replacement tires of the same type where $150+ each. I decided I didn't need anthing THAT sticky.
The Tire Rack is where I bought the Yokos but do not take the advise of every customer support /sales person that answers the phone. Thats how I got the Kohmos. By the way, I have been told, our local track, Portland International Raceway, where the Porsche club has track day does not allow Kohomo tires. I don't know if it is the track people or just the Porsche club. From my experience with the Kohomo I understand the concern. The Kohomos made the rear of my car have a mind of it's own. Turn in was unpredictable and when it came on it was severe.

At the present time one particular type of Kumho tire is being recalled and therefore can't be used on the track. Plenty of people use Kumho tires so sweeping, unsubstaniated and non-factual generalisations don't help anybody.
Different tires also sometimes need different wheel alignments and it also depends on the type of driving you are doing. The Yoko AVS ES100 is a great tire and we have several customers with them. If you haven't already, make sure you 964 has a good four-wheel alignment with a set up for the type of driving you do.
