general question with 964, want to buy
Ok guys, first time here in the 964 forum. I don't anything about the 964s other then the usually carp about bad oil leaks. I am usually hang out at the fourm. Came across a 92 964. It has a salvage title. This guy has a corvette shop and he said it used to be his car. He wants 19k for it. What do you guys think. Oh, it has 55,000 miles on it. Been hit in the back.
What am I lookng at in terms of oil leaks, head studs, and all the bad things that were associated with that car. I really don't think is that bad but then I know anything about them. It will be my daily driver. I am getting rid or my miata. I don't know what the difference in power is like. I have a modded 930 for the canyons and the weekend. Do the A/C work in the them. I am going down there to look after lunch. didn't have time to search. Thanks a bunch. Jeff |

Stay away.... You can buy a low mileage 964 for low $20's or high teens if you are patient. Low to mid $20's will get you a very nice example. Don't skimp on these cars, they can cost a fortune to maintain or get right.
They are known for leaks, gasket replacement, make sure it has a vent kit. Always get a PPI. |

R6,
I mean the G50 cars 86-88. I want a stock (little bolt on stuff is OK) street car that I can drive everyday with working A/C. I can't drive my 930. Too much, for me. The steering is a workout, and the clutch is a killer in LA traffic. I like something fun, It doesn't have to be a 964 or 993. This one just came up. I was thinking this was a good deal. I do not keep up with the pricing. As far as I know, the owner said that it doesn't leak oil. Jeff |

hahahahah, sorry, my bad. I am not to familiar with the pre 964 versions. I know the 964's are very refined compared to the pre 964's. Air condition etc. However, they still have a very raw feel.
If I were you, go over to the rennlist forum. There is a huge wealth of knowledge. You will have more replies than you can imagine. |

Yeah those guys are a little intese. I know they talk your ear off with a wealth of info. That's a good thing. I just want a simple quick answer to some of the known problems. I know that I have to spend a few bucks on it to get it tune. That's just the way it goes with these cars. TRE will take care of it.

A 1992 964 will have a redesigned head which includes a seal between the head and cylinder. This change came through in mid-1991.
The vent referred to goes between the distributor and the intake to pull ozone out of the dual distributor. (The ozone being bad for the belt that drives the second distrubutor.) Pelican sells a kit for $19. Very easy. The 1992 will also have a later flywheel, so that should be O.K. The earlier cars had some problems with the Freudenburg DMF. I think they switched to the LUK for 1992 but this should be verified. FWIW, I drive a 1991 with the original gasketless head design, and so far it shows no sign of leaking. I also have the original flywheel and it also works perfectly well. The '92 may have a couple appearance upgrades, aero mirrors and more stylish wheels. A very good example could run you about $23,000. |
