Manual steering conversion for 964 C2
I recently purchased a 964 with a leaky power steering system. I like the idea of converting it to manual steering due to the simplicity and reduced weight.
What is involved with doing this? Is there a block off/bypass available or would I need to install a new rack? Any links to tutorials, other forum posts, or the parts needed would be most helpful. Thanks! Kyle |

I rebuild mine at home, the only difficult part was to get the rebuild kit from ZF, the part numberof the kit is: 7832 633 010 and it's a ZF number.
And from this link you should be able to locate your local agent: http://www.zf.com

The 993 rack bolts up and is far less expensive. My '93 cabriolet loves its 993 steering rack!

Thanks for the input on rebuilding and adding the 993 rack. I may end up going down one of these paths, but something still intrigues me about switching over to a manual steering setup.
I've heard of guys doing it. Can anyone shed more light on how it is done or what is needed? Thanks, Kyle |

I read that during driving is basically the same, parking is a complete pain in the ass, so the benefits were not worth it.

Totally agree with oracle, as a track car no problem but as street car too much effort, the savings on weight or gain on performance are so marginal... besides try to get a manual steering is another big adventure, I remember that it was an option for the RS on some years, and converting yours to manual is more complicated than the rebuild, you have to open the rack and drill some kind piston inside to allow some free moving.
Another source is pelican, ****** auto and another internet sales related to porsche, they sale rebuild racks with warranty and you can send the core later for some refund, and finally if you search ebay there is a lot of rebuilders offering units like this

I saw a thread some time ago on Rennlist about how to convert a p/s rack to manual.
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-forum/491361-driving-impressions-c2-manual-steering-conversion.html Per Cobalt, RSA manual racks are still available at $700. I'm not sure this would be a good idea with a stock 964. Our cars are heavier than Carreras/SCs and steering effort will be quite high in comparison.
