IMS & RMS question

My 2006 997 is showing some slight oil seepage from the RMS. I change oil every 2000 miles to inspect the oil filter for metal shavings from IMS. I have never found any shavings to date. Also, I am at 34,000 miles on the car. If the RMS is leaking, can this cause me issues with the IMS, or are they two separate animals? Repair shop is suggesting replacing both seals with an upgrade in ceramic at a cost of $2,600. All thoughts or experiences are welcomed. Thanks Guys!!

So I shouldn't be concerned with a slight seepage of oil from the RMS? Is replacing just this seal a major job? Trying to weigh whether I should have just the RMS done? I would include IMS if it's a big project to do the RMS. Again, no metal in the oil filter, so I'm tempted to wait it out.

If your RMS is seeping, sooner or later it is going to get a whole lot worse. The updated PTFE seal is only a $20 item, but requires a special tool to install it properly (it can be done without the tool, but most do not get it in correctly, leading to more leaks), and the removal of the clutch and flywheel just to get at it.

If you are going this deep, it make no sense to not update the IMS bearing as well, as most of the costs to do this is just getting at it, exactly like the RMS.

2006 997 IMSB replacement = engine disassembly. With the big bearing in your motor you really have nothing to worry about IMSB wise.

When you go in there it certainly makes sense to replace both seals (RMS and IMSB seal) at the same time.

Cheers

I was referring to IMS in general, but in his case, removing the rear seal on the non serviceable IMS is critical, as they are known to also fail, just not in the numbers of the earlier units.

I'll just add that while resealing the IMS flange, you should also pull the grease seal off the front of the IMS. Takes seconds at that point:
