Any body have a current Porsche recommended oil list? Its oil change time of the year for me. I think last year i put the M1 0W-40 in her. I was reading that some folks were using the rotella 5W-40T now? Thanks for any info
This is for a 2001 996 tip that i dont track. i use as every day transportation in southern Ca. |

Mobil 1 is fine. More importantly is how often you change the oil. Don't do the 15,000 mile oil changes with any Porsche that has the IMS issues. Change the oil more frequently, like 4-5k max or at least once a year if you drive less miles than that annually.
The Rotella oil by Shell is good for the flat tappet rockers for the older air cooled 911's but Brad Penn is better. Besides, I believe that Rotella is not synthetic like M1.

The Shell Rotella T5 line is a blend, the T6 line is a full synthetic. Neither have ACEA ratings, which is a more critical issue.

I challenge you to check out Amsoil. They have a European formula 5-30 and 5-40 that will compare to and or exceed the performance any of the oils mentioned. They have zinc fortified formulas as well.
the prices will compare as well. Go to amsoil .com and check out the different products if you decide to try it get 20% off by using referral code 5026324. |

I believe T6 carries ACEA E9 cert, doesn't it? On another note, Amsoil AMO 10W-40 appears to be a good fit for 996/7 engines with increased ZDDP levels and Sulfated ash compared to Euro blend. Has anybody tried AMO in water cooled yet? Any comments? Cheers, =L= |

Last tech sheet we saw for the T6 did not list any ACEA ratings, but they may have gotten them after it was released. In any case, E9 is for long drain cycle commercial diesel engines with particulate filters. What you should be looking for is ACEA A3, B3, B4 ratings.
As Amsoil is not a signatory to the ACEA Technical Consortium Agreement (a requirement to participate in ACEA’s mandatory independent lab testing protocols), none of their products would have an ACEA rating of any type.

I have 84,000 miles on my 996. Triple digit temp location. All original. Mobil 1 0W-40 is all I have used. OK so far. Every 6k miles. I cut open the filter and have not seen anything but nice looking oil.
It's a 100 bucks a pop if you do it yourself. I know Porsche says to change it at higher intervals but I still change it about once a year, which is about 6k miles. I don't know where the oil goes but I keep it topped off and that is about 1 quart between oil changes. They use oil and it doesn't come out of the exhaust pipes. |
