2002 C4 Cab thread.
Hi all. I've owned 4 911's air cooled from a 85 Coupe, 85 Targa, 92 964 C4 Coupe, 77 930. About two years ago I sold my 964 and went out and got a 2002 C4 cab with 102,000. It had a rebuilt engine by LN engineering. It was done at 87,000. It had an IMS issue and was rebuilt and with in 10,000 miles it went again and the engine was shipped to LN and they put a triple IMS bearing and new 3.8 Pistons and sleeves.
I love the car. I miss the crap out of my 930. The 996 is a great car. It had tons of upgrades, like a light weight Alum, fly wheel and a GT clutch. I was driving by Scranton PA on 84 and felt what I thought was a chatter. I drove it to Mtech in New Rochelle NY an Indy. I ordered an European suspension from Sun Coast for the 2002 996 Cab. Also after a test drive, Mike determine that it was the clutch. So I took it in on Monday. He ordered all the parts and while the car is up I am having the BBS's referbed. So Mike dropped the Trans and started to take the suspension apart. He found that the RMS was leaking. I never saw it drip, but the seal was wet and it was building up by the IMS. I thought it was the IMS when I saw it. He showed me that it was the RMS and how it the oil came down. So today he got most of the parts in from Porsche in New Rochelle. He put the RMS in and I took some pics. I opted not to keep the light weight flywheel and go back to stock duel mass. Its a long story but I hate noises and the rattle of the GT flywheel is really annoying and I would have to keep my clutch pedal on the floor to stop it. So lets just say that and the stiffness of the clutch out weight the 30 Lbs I was saving. It really is 20 Lbs. We weight it. The Alum light weight FW is 14 Lbs. The Duel Mass is 34 lbs. Any way. Ill keep posting like I did on my 930 Rebuild. Not many people post pics of work on the 996. I am also waiting for my fabspeed cat's to come in. 6 to 8 week wait and its been 5 weeks since I ordered it. Also getting the sport muffler's also. Here are some pics. Wow. No replies. On my air cooled post I had about 5 to 10 replies before I could answer. Lol. Just other stuff I have changed on the car were, the starter. It would make a weird sound every once and a while. Never failed but I'm one to repair before it fails and gets stuck.
I also kept getting a ABS and PSM error every now and then under hard acceleration. Ended up being the MAS out of everything. Changed that with OEM MAS. That was a lot for a little sensor. Also my front brakes and rotors were shot and got new rotors and brake pads. I'm doing the rears now that the rear suspension is coming off. Oh one day my convertible roof wouldn't go up and I called Mtech. He told me to wiggle the key. I did and the top went right up. He told me not to shut the car off and drive it to him. He was so right. When I got there I couldn't get the key out. Ended up needing a ignition switch. Then about 5 months later my HID's would turn on sometimes. I would have to turn them on and off to get them both to turn on. So it was the head light switch. Changed that. Got a new carpet kit from Lyods. The best part was when the back seats are down, they sell a carpet to cover the back seats when down that CARRERA 4. Looks great. I brought a silver face gauges from Ebay to match the silver interior accents. The freaken gauges hold the miles and it showed I had like 70,000 instead of the 110,000 that the car had and Mtech couldn't change it. I spoke to North Hollywood gauges and they said for 300 bucks they will swap the gauges. He also informed me that the cluster that I got is a turbo and thank god I didn't run the car with it. He said the sensors are different and I would get a bunch of error readings and CEL's. I have done a bunch more just can't remember right now. One more thing that I just found out is that the triple IMS that LN Engineering does in house is good for 70,000 to 80,000 miles as per them when I called yesterday. Anyone have any info on that? I just see videos and info on the double and single row and the "Permeant solution" they sell now. Thanks. Robert

How much did it cost you to have the RMS and clutch replaced?

You can see why you were having chatter on your light weight flywheel from about 9-11 O'Clock'
You are lucky that your mechanic knew where to get a Porsche guibo (or Giubo see it both ways) disk. Porsche only offers the whole shaft for $$$$. These folks have them also. Many folks have successfully used a BMW guibo. I think it is marginally thicker. "Driveshaft flex disc “Guibo” - C4 and Turbo These folks list the OEM Porsche replacement for $84.06 KO Performance in Florida KO Performance - High End Import Performance and OEM Parts, car parts Part #: 102539005-57 KO Price: $84.06 Shipping: $0.00 - FREE Shipping! - & *Ship Group Stock Status: In Stock - Ready to Ship! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book #: 10 2539 005 Description: Driveshaft Flex Disc Applications: Carrera 4 99 thru 05 Manufacturer: O.E.M."

Joewalk68. No clue yet. Haven't got the bill. He is still working on the car. I have the OEM euro suspension from Suncoast being put in. The clutch wasn't put in as of today. He is swamped over at Mtech. Its the busy season. I am also getting my rims redone. I know the dual mass was around 800 and the clutch package which was the clutch and pressure plate and all the small bolts and throw out bearing and the small cover that goes on the main shaft of the gearbox, that the throwout bearing sits on, was around another $600. You might not need all that. I just wanted out of the light weight flywheel. The chatter was driving me nuts and the rattle at idle with the clutch out was driving me nuts. I'm also changing the slave cylinder. I want not issues with the clutch.
FPB111, Yea that's what Mike at Mtech said. He finds all the work arounds for the 911's. One of the best shops and Porsche Indy that I know of. He got a great deal on the part. I'm thinking of changing the inter part on the Alum flywheel and reselling it. It only has 35000 miles on it, but the problem is that it is a pain in the a$$ in traffic and when your on a hill in traffic. The GT set up, you have to rev up or you will stall. Not much play like a Duel mass. I drove a buddy of mine 997 with the stock set up and it was a cream puff clutch compared to my set up. I would take off like a bat out of hell but it was stiff and was not good on my leg. Robert

How thick are the sway bars on the M030?
If you don't have calipers an easy way to measure is to use an open end wrench.

Robert,
Thanks for sharing! Like Frank mentioned, most of the Pelicans are air cooled guys and only slowly, the water cooled guys are starting to flock to this side of the pond. I'm sure your thread would definitely generate much more interest over on Rennlist or Renntech! I wish more water cooled guys would post here. I prefer the layout and how easy it is on the eyes here on Pelican. Thanks!

FPB111, I'll let you know Tuesday when I go back to the shop. I'll measure them. Bcrdukes, I love this site. When I started to rebuild my 930 I joined. It is so easy and people here aren't Bullsh$%er's. I've meet guys here that have sold me very rare parts. I had a 77 930. Also sold two cars here. One went to Denmark and one went to Canada. Both guys were great to deal with. I really hope the 996 and 997 kick off. In the next year I am buying a 996 turbo as soon as I find one that I like, IE miles and not flashed or beefed up. One thing that scares me is the whole cluster thing I just found out. I brought a silver face cluster on ebay. I installed it. Very easy by the way. Two Torx screws and the whole thing comes out. Then two more held the cluster in. I swapped the cluster and I had 70000 miles. My car has around 110,000ish. I changed it back right away because Mike over at Mtech said that the only way he could change the miles is if the cluster had less than 100 miles on it. I also called North hollywood gauges. They could do it but recommended for me to send them both clusters and that they could swap out the face, which is what I'm going to do when I put it down after the season. So that has me frighten of buying another 996, like the turbo, if someone can just swap the cluster and cut the miles. I'm going to have to rely on car fax and history of receipts.
Robert

Sway bar.
FPB111 the sway bars are as follows.
Stock front is 22 and rear is 18, The M030, front is 24 and rear is 20. Also the clutch and trans is back in. The rear suspicion is in and the fronts needed a bearing and mounts. Man, they should have after market mounts. They had to order them from Porsche. $$$. Also got new say bar links for the M030. One thing is the slave cylinder. I thought since the clutch and everything was replaced now, why not change the slave cylinder. The mechanic said its in perfect shape. So now the rims need to be referbed and the suspension finished. Oh and the back brakes and rotors. I saw the oil separator. Thats another thing that I said I should change but also was told, if it isn't broke don't fix it. I have a few more pics but have to hook up my phone. Maybe tomorrow morning. Robert

Update. Car is almost done. The suspension is done. Clutch is done. Rear brakes are done. Now I saw that the right side of the exhaust was about 2 inches lower than before and its engine mounts. So they will come in tomorrow along with my BBS rims from being referbed. So Saturday I get to pick it up. Can't wait.
Next will be the fabspeed exhaust. I have a send out date of 6/24 so worst case I'll get it the last week of June or early July. After my bank account recoups, the Plenum and intake is next. From reading, that should give me a nice power upgrade. Does anyone know if I have to get a flash, with all the updates, 3.8, exhaust, intake or will the computer compensate? Robert

Car is mostly done
I picked up the car yesterday. I still have to install the fabspeed cats and the new mufflers. That will be next weeks project. I've dumped over $9000 on this car. I'll tell you, what a difference in the clutch. I never drove my car with a duel mass. I always, since I brought it, had the light weight on it. It was on or off. Like in traffic. Now I can leave it in second gear and drive in traffic with out pushing the clutch all the time. Also the M030 suspension is great. It gives a great feeling going up Bear mountain and Storm king mountain here in NY. Corners like a bat out of hell. Also got my BBS's redone. They look like brand used..... LOL. Tomorrow, Cars and Coffee. Here are some pics of the finished car.

I would have thought the ROW suspension would sit a little lower. How does it feel?
