2004 turbo cab vrs 2009 3.8 cab
The check is not in hand yet but my 87 Targa should be sold by tomorrow. Assuming all goes as planed, my next purchase will be a water cooled being either the 04 turbo cab or the 997.2 2009-10 cab. Money is pretty close with either so the question is which one? My gut feeling is the turbo will hold its value better then the carrera or the carrera s plus a bit more spirited but the 997 looks better IMO. Any thoughts on this?

The trend off line is leaning toward the 04 turbo cab mainly due to the power and a better potential of appreciation down the road. Appreciate some comments vrs the 997.2 cab.

How many miles?
What are the known maintenance issues for each car? Reading in Pano about the 996TT with over 500K miles was impressive... but I am sure some maintenance items are not cheap (ie, engine drops to change plugs?) Are there specific cars in mind? ie, there's two 996tt cabs that you are looking at or are these simply cars you will spend time pursuing once the aircooler is gone? I'd make sure you drive them both, obviously. While I had a boxster, I found I really didn't like the dash design. Same design as the 996TT. To me, the 997 interior can be a much nicer and more cohesive design and nicer place to be in. Are there improvements in the electronics that make the 997 better/easier than the 996tt? Do you want/need the AWD of the TT? or is RWD of the 997 ok? (assuming you aren't looking at a 4cab)

Thanks racer, have not actually selected one yet so was just interested in others opinion. I guess I'm looking at this more from which one would hold its value better. I did bratty well with the targa, essentially free for the 12 years I held her. For my use, I don't really need a turbo or awd although it could be fun for those occasional spirited drives.

Your targa enjoyed an unusual and unexpected price bubble.
Not sure when such a bubble will develop for the watercooled 911s, especially since they were made in generally large numbers. The 996tt, well, it is a tt and with that, should sustain values for a bit. I haven't looked in a while but I haven't seen too many for less than $35K. I imagine the 997's will drop, but more (what are they, Mid 40's-50s currently?) Of the watercooled 911s I would expect to retain values are 1) GT cars (997, 996, 991 gt2, gt3 etc) 2) Turbos 3) Then the limited cars, like the Club Coupes, 50th Anniversary type examples 4) then the rest, with the 3.4 996's living at the bottom.

Made the decision last weekend and picked up an 09 C2S cab PDK. Atlas gray metallic with 45,000 miles and under a CPO. Still learning the specifics but the sport and sport plus drive option is a hoot with the PDK. It was a hard decision to sell the 87 targa but now that I did, I'm very pleased with the results. Better pics to come.
