Engine tin?
Do I need it on my race car? My engine tuner told me to get rid of it on my race car. Has anyone done this? Car has a built three liter motor.

I know many racers that don't have the engine tin anymore. Many of them do have a shroud built so the alternator fan gets air from above the engine instead of sucking it up from underneath the engine.

Hmm, I was always told not to remove the bottom tin as hot air rises from the exhaust causing the motor to run hotter. Last April I was running at AAA speedway and the president of POC was running his 3.6 that way no floor tin, he had 2 coolers up front and he was thinking another oil tank up front to increase oil capacity he couldn't keep it cool enough. I run my 3.6 with all the tin modded as needed and only 1 - 72 row front cooler in the bumper without overheating problems on the track

I think there are some benefits to keeping the tin: smoother air flow under car, cooler air to intake, less of a mess when you go off track, etc

Leave it on for better cooling and cleanliness. Also prevents kicking up junk into the compartment. Weighs next to nothing so no gain there. My motor is 275hp. One modest cooler in the air dam and oil temp never breaches 210 F on the hottest track day.

If your car is ever street-driven, keep the tin.

Don't need it, can't afford it, don't want it if I could.

Wait--you can't afford the engine tin??? It's one of the cheapest parts on a stock 911 motor, let alone a race motor!!
Not needing, possibly; not wanting it, sure--but not affording it? I call BS on that. --DD

Engine tin is cheap. That was a Days of Thunder reference: "Can't use 'em. Don't want 'em. Can't afford 'em."
