I guess people bag them mostly because, they have moved away from what everything Porsche stood for sports cars.

I don't think most people think they are actually a "bad" car, as most of the reviews have said they are quiet good if you can afford one.

What are they going to make next something for the masses, maybe to rival the Hyundai Excel?

I just hope Ferrari never makes a SUV.

I was not cray about the Cayenne at all.. I have a 04S, and we just went on a 2k mile road trip with it. I must say that this thing is very nice. Performed flawlessly. Fast as you need it to be, returned a 19mpg fuel outing at about 76mph avg. with the ac running. Never ran hot, oil pressure was fine. Drove for 9hrs in absolute comfort in the seats. Got more thumbs ups, wows, and kneck bending than I could have ever imagined. Everyone seemed to love this SUV... By the way it handles like a dream. I surprised a many of sports cars..

I may have more seat time in a Cayenne then nearly anyone .... 58,000 miles and counting (a tank of 93 octane every day :eek: ) The vehicle continues to impress. It does everything well and is a blast to drive. Rarely does a day go by when someone doesn't walk up and want to check it out. I'm now off-warranty and in 'no-man's land', so to speak. A year from now, it will have over 100K. So I'm debating on selling now and buying a new one or hanging on to it for a while. -- Curt

I have no problems with the Cayenne. However, I think they would look better with a lower front spoiler.

Besides being hatched from greed, by a board of directors that simply couldn't leave well enough alone, they risked the family name with a new product in a market that already has too many participants and too many good alternatives. Besides being proportionally ugly and looking like the VW counterpart, with a lot of ticky tacky interior styling ques that Elvis would like such as the bright metal triangles in the steering wheel, being very overweight at 5300 pounds, overpriced, and with so many problems that it got Porsche third from the bottom of the JD Power Initial Quality Survey this year, nothing is wrong with the Cayenne.

It just strikes me as wrong on so many levels.

I hate "fake SUVs", ones never intended to go offroad; ones built on car chassies; ones with no skid plates, et al. Mall crawlers. I hate that every yuppie soccer mom who never goes offroad or tows anything has one. SUVs are school busses, cargo containers.. Why make them fast? Will Porsche make a fast full-size Van next?

Porsche makes (made) sports cars. I don't want Jeep to build sports cars, and I don't want Porsche to build SUVs. Porsche was one of the few companies that remained pure to an ideal.

It's for people who want to one-up their neighbors with X5's.

If they have to make something that holds more than 2 adults, I'm sure it would be much less blasphemous to make an M3 killer sedan instead of a hulking SUV.

I also can't understand how someone can walk into a Porsche dealer with $90k and walk out with anything but a 911. On the other hand, it would be a cool tow vehicle for getting the GT2 to the track ;)

The Cayenne may be a great SUV. But why, why, why an SUV?

Enough people have already put 911 engines into VW Bus's, so...why not a Carrera GT engined Van? I could just see the Ford F250 Econoline Purists now, "Vans are supposed to be for Workers carrying Ladders on top and carpet hanging out the back doors or for Van Conversions with sinks and beds for camping, not Fast AND luxorious. $100 K for a bread box is rediculous. lol

Well IMO other than it being named after a pepper, and the fact that it still needs to have few bugs worked out, I can't find much wrong with it.

I have been drving 911's for over 25 years and I have to admit I hated the thought of it when I first heard about it. After test driving a couple I fell head over heals and had to have one. Just bought an 04 CT and next to my 94 3.6T (which will keep up with about any Porsche ever made, including GT2's 3's whatever, and IMO is one of the best Porsche ever made!!!) it makes the perfect compliment for those days that I want to enjoy the ride but not work as hard.

I wouldn't mock it unless you have spent several hours behind the wheel and have a chance to really see first hand what these things can do. The Cayenne Turbo takes SUV's to new level that the X5 or ML MB cannot even come close to. It may not replace the 911 but it surely adds fun to those days when a 911 is not the right car.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1094759389.jpg

I test drove a new Cayenne a few weeks ago for free tickets to see the new movie Celluar (from porsche). Not a bad ride and i'll be more interested when she is three years old from a lease turn in.

I would guess that the V6 models will be in the 20k range and the V8 non turbos 25-30k range.

I am interested in test driving the Toureg too though!

I finally got a chance to take an 04S on an extended test drive last weekend and was blown away by it. It's definitely fast and corners unbelievably flat for a tall vehicle. My motivation in considering a Cayenne is I want a vehicle big AND comfortable enough for four people that'll rival what I get from a 911. This certainly fit the bill so much so that I'm now contemplating taking on a car payment.

I also test drove an Infiniti FX45 last night. I'm equally impressed with its fit and finish plus the appointments for about $10K less than an S. It is, however, not as fast or agile as the Cayenne. Also, the cargo space is miniscule. Lastly, it had way more bling than an equally appointed S. The Porsche's styling seems to me to be less obvious, if that makes sense.

It'll be the Cayenne for me unless a Cadillac SRX can blow me away. I'm taking one for a test drive sometime this weekend. One of the car mags rated luxury SUVs this way:
