What's wrong with the Cayenne?
 

There's so much negative stuff on this BBS about the Cayenne and I just don't get why that is. Sometimes I like to take my wife and son on a drive in a Porsche but we can't all fit in a 911 anymore since my kid is now taller than me. The solution has been to take both 911s and stay in touch by walkie-talkie but we're not really together. The Cayenne would solve that problem. I understand that it rides like a Porsche, sounds like a 911, smells like oil like a 911, so what is it that you dislike so much? Man, if I had $30K right now, I'd sell my 2001 4Runner and buy me a Cayenne. Used ones are going for $40 - $50K now at some dealerships! No car payments for me, if I can't pay cash, I'll save until I can.

So now, tell me why you dislike a true four-seater, corners like a 911, blows away most sedans and other SUVS Porsche.

I like the turbo model, would be a great family ride for sure.

Well you can get a VW Touareg for half the price, looks nicer too.

Might not go as hard though, but if you wanted a car for that reason why would you buy a 4wd anyway.

I would have an X5 V8 over both of them anyway.

Exactly... you could get a Touareg for 1/2 the price... and spend the rest on a 911 :)

Well, it's ugly, overweight and a truck. I know it's faster than any of the cars I own, but so is a Corvette and I just have to say "so what"

Also, people are afraid that instead of saving Porsche it will sink it.

Anyway, you should really do a search if you want hours of amusing reading, although this thread will likely rehash it all again anyway.

It's a VW chassis with a bigger motor of course vw guys like to believe its a Porsche chassis with a VW motor! ;)

Who cares, Porsche is a buisness; they saw the growing popularity for SUV's and decided to jump into the segment with an overpriced SUV to increase their profits (they are the most profitable auto company in the world, or so they say). The 996 sales are steadily decreasing b/c the 997 will soon be released. The Cayenne helps keep them with some profit, although I dont think it was the reason for the release of the Cayenne. But I do believe the 997 release is the reason for the release of the 996 Turbo S in August.

The bottom line: porsche doesnt cater to purists, they just want your money; the (aircooled) purists are only *****ing about the current 911's, not buying them.

My main beef w/ the Cayenne is the styling. The front is not too bad, kind of an elongated current Porsche face. The side view starts to fall down, as the proportion between the sheet metal and the greenhouse is poor. The beltline transitions badly from the front fender and is awkward at the rear one. The chrome trim looks tacked on. The rear is particularly bad and not befitting a vehicle in this price range.

Too bad. The performance is great.

The original press release photos were just horrendous...that's what did it in for me. Once I looked closer and sat in one I found it to be a well designed and nicely sorted out machine; I wouldn't mind owning one. For the price...well that's debatable. One big thing that sticks out at me for the price is that I have seen several models with substandard paint quality...substandard for Porsche anyway. Excessive orange peel in the solid colors from the manufacturing line.

I, like lots of other people, hate all SUVs in general. I hate the concept of the SUV. And the Cayenne represents a 180 degree shift away from what Porsche has always been about. I like the company a LOT less these days because of the stupid Cayenne and the fact that the 911's are watercooled and becoming less attractive every year.

If you want a sporty 4 door, buy a Bimmer or a Jag XJR.

soooo, used Cayennes are going for 40-50K and Toureags are 1/2 the cost of a Cayenne ...... can somebody show me where I can buy a Toureag for $20-25K? I'll take a dozen at the price. :rolleyes:

In reality, one would be VERY hard pressed to find a used V8 Toureag for under $40K - they sticker for $50 brand new.

I see loads of them on my way to work, and they're all driven by women taking their spoiled little brats to school. If you want a decent family vehicle, get an Audi S4 Estate.

Exactly. Again with the Cayenne, it's faster, can tow, can go to the beach and snow, plus it can carry four or five plus gear. Why would I pay the same price for a used V8 Toureg? And, I just don't think BMW fit and finish is as good as Porsche so the X5 doesn't do it for me. I owned a 328i convertible and $hit kept falling off inside the cockpit, the radio was crap and the dash felt cheap.

i don't like the fact that every 2 and a half weeks some thread pops up in the 911 forum with a Cayenne good or bad discussion that goes on about basically nothing...

The Cayenne is fine by me, but for the money I'd prefer a sports car.

I personally was skeptical at first just like the rest of you, however, having read so much about them and heard how awsome they are from a few people that own them, I'd have to say, I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could afford one. If you need an SUV and could afford it and are looking to buying a SUV in that price range, I say why not support them as opposed to another company. Buy based on having done your homework as far as your needs, price, performance, towing capabilities, style, etc. Remember, the profits of the Cayenne help offset some of the R & D of the 911 & Boxster and even funnel into the racing program. I know some will say, "what racing program?" but they do still have a very strong support program in the GT classes, if they didn't the Beloved GT3 would have remained a pipe dream or at the very least never have reached our shores. Thats my $.02
