Ex track car?

Seeing a lot of people's ex track cars which are cleaned up and shopped as "hot rods" or "Outlaws"

Not saying there is anything wrong what that but it might be fair to let people know.

My wife wasn’t a virgin when I married her. And I love her and she’s great.

Just saying.

I saw that, and I loved it. If I were to buy it I'd go ITB/ EFI most likely.

Could you elaborate a bit more what you think the problem would be with this? What makes you think it was a track car, besides the motor? That was a popular build ten/fifteen years ago.

Newer cars always list "never tracked" on the sales adds. I think a tracked car is viewed as being rode hard and put away wet. A hot rod is usually babied and just looks the part.
The two types of cars have vastly different resale values. A RSR Clone with lots of sparkle sells for $100k to $200k. A RSR look track car sells for $60k if you're lucky.

So if you take your beat down track car and pretty it up without saying anything to get more money; Are you being deceitful?

Lots of track/race cars are being converted to pretty street cars.

I suppose it is deceitful if you advertise "never tracked" when it was once a race car.

If a car was tracked in the 70s and fully restored in the 80s is the track history expected to be a negative issue still?
Track cars sometimes have very limited use, sitting in the trailer or garage for most the time and rarely used a couple weekends a year.

I would be more concerned about undisclosed accident damage from either track or street use.

Assess any car based upon it's current condition at the time of sale.

In addition, on a newer car, never tracked might be appealing. It speaks to the degree of use

On an old converted track car, the question is, is it all used up or nice and fresh?

In a restored car where it has completely been gone through, does tracked or not matter?
Many fresh old race cars don’t sell for as much because for race use, fit and finish is not very critical

Aside from freshness, I think that is where the substantial difference is between a track car and an RSR replica for the street, and that is what the price often reflects

The car in the ad seems to have very nice fit and finish at first glance

I wasn't dumping on that car or any car in particular. You all make valid points, I guess I just think that if I was buying the car I would want to know its history and how it was used.

This thread bring up a really good question though about how much past history matters or doesn’t matter

For example, a work hardened rally chassis adds an unknown factor of wear beyond road racing or street driving. Is the chassis itself used up? That’s a great question when considering a car with extensive rally history...

Oh, absolutely. For example, many track cars don't have an odometer and are TMU when it comes time to sell. Then you are left wondering if the engine has 100 hours or 500 hours on it.

The other side is you get a track car that is used sparingly as mentioned above AND still has an odometer. A guy owns it for 20 years, puts 20,000 track miles on it, and then throws in an interior and repaints it. If he doesn't disclose that those were track miles you're buying something with a lot of deferred maintenance being passed off as a low mileage survivor.

Agreed, especially when the defects are covered up in a nice layer of expensive plastic and paint.

Many people may not understand the overall wear a track car is subjected to. My BMW race car stays at between 4k-7.2k during every session. This equates to many more miles than would be shown on a street car's odometer.

The stresses induced into the chassis are also significant. Constant chassis flex take a toll over time. How much....is hard to determine.

In my opinion it would be improper not to disclose the amount of track use.

Many track cars are maintained at a higher level. Many mods are added to make it better. Most are stored inside in a dry environment.

If you buy one - you might get a great car...and if you are street driving it, you will likely never stress it to the level it had been stressed...so Each Car should be looked at individually.

that rollbar in that thing says street car... it is mounted to the floor pan and would be of little use in a roll over.

I did a sniff test. The a taste test. So yes - she passed the PPI.
21 yrs later and she still drives great. Some small issues but the local dealer is taking care of them. Parts are I terchangable.
All in all, she was a hot race car then and is fantastic now. Love her.

Right. And many race cars are beat to death, put away wet and taken out to the track and beat to death again. Just be careful out there boys.

One of the best pieces of advice that I ever heard about buying a race car fro racing is to buy it as it rolls into the paddock from the winners circle (before the expensive stuff gets swapped out)
