No, I talk as if not driving your car consistently for 40 years to protect it is dumb. The rust will attack the car no matter what you do, unless it's in the desert or in a humidity controlled environment, which is also a dumb place to keep it for 40 years unless you run a museum. Who are they saving them for?

These are not Rembrandts. These are mass produced modes of transportation and sport that were meant to be enjoyed. My comment about 'what do I know' was meant to refer to those of you who enjoy sitting in their garage and staring at a good looking vehicle.

She's there alright, but I won't spoil her by getting her wet. I'd rather just sit here and look at how cool she is.

Dumb.

I am with Nick..... what is the sense of owning if you are not going to experience it...... these cars are about driving till you can smell the car working.......

MrBonus 10-30-2018 05:49 PM

I feel like I can enjoy and experience my car just fine without taking it out in foul weather.

Matt Monson 10-30-2018 06:27 PM

Last night I saw something Jack Olsen wrote about his car. He was talking about how he will never sell it, how he's spent 20 years modifying it to suit himself for use on both track and street, and how it's perfectly his, for driving it.

Not a Rembrandt. It's something more. How much art in the world do you get to play with?

Ahhhh.
I come from a different mind.
I have many 911s in the garage.
I would hate for any of them to have missed to thrill of driving in the rain. Those warm summer days when we arecarving through some super B roads and we see the clouds forming on the horizon. Turn back? No. Go further. Drive into the rain let it run up under our skin. Into the cracks we didn’t know we had. Our hot metal from the summer sun. And the cool rain form a midst of steam as it slaps our brakes and rotors. And when we do stop thenhiss of water dripping onto the engine and exhaust. The smell of porsche oil and water misted into the air.

Ahhh. Driving in the rain is all part of the fun of these cars. Driving it to the point where you can feel the rear slip and catching it. Ahh. The fun of driving in the rain.

And snow too. Maybe I shouldn't sell the rusty targa now that the snow is flying. After all it still has heat.

littleoldman 10-30-2018 07:00 PM

We drive a 91 964 C4 as our winter car. Rain sleet snow and sun. It’s the DD.

Matt Monson 10-30-2018 07:18 PM

An oldie but a goodie. Jeff really does drive it year round, not just for videos. Not a daily, but at least a couple days a month when he's out here. Even puts his canoe on top.

No, the same mind......

One of the most memorable rides was riding in the rooster tail of a mate's G Bodied 3.6L on a curvy road in New England.... Another was driving down an abandoned PCH in a drizzle with six other long hoods and a soup-up 356..... Another was well you get the point...... imagine what I would have missed.....

Pictures from bad weather adventures:

right on.
'driving in the rain has it's own fun and issues.

but washing. I don't think folks here do what you and I do on washing, which borderlines religion.

if you driven a car more than 100 miles and got it DIRTY. you need water to wash not detailer. make sure blow dry it. and the leave blower aint gonna do it. I run 8hp blower whit warm air. but that's another story

Can't let the rain or sleet slow you down..

Great Pic's Mac. How many miles of Hwy 1 did you run?
Fort Bragg to San Diego is on my to do list.

Let me ask you this ... would you run your engine on dirty oil or cheap gas ?

If not, I sure hope you have replaced ALL the weatherstripping seals as part of regular maintenance.

Guess what, that costs $$$.

Still dumb ?

You rebuild your engine every 100k mi or so. Weatherstripping tends to last even longer than that.

I don't see the correlation between staring at my car in the garage because I'm protecting it from the elements and running my engine on cheap gas and dirty oil. I do admit I wipe down my car(s) after it's been in the rain.

A friend of mine owns a 96TT from new that has 20k miles on it in 22 years. Every once in a blue moon he takes it out and does 120MPH on the highway in a straight line. Umm..

He's also on the WL for a new Ferrari..don't even know which one. I asked him why he's buying a Ferrari when he'll never even drive it. His answer? "Because I like to look at it."

I think that's dumb. He thinks that's cool. This is what I mean by "what do I know?"

I was lucky enough to run up and down the coast between LA and San Francisco five times. Two time as part of early California Targas which I can not recommend enough.

The 2011 run was a delightful mistake. I made a navigational mistake that left us with an empty PCH. It was closed for landslide repairs at Big Sur. We were able to drive for 45 minutes of empty highway back tracking down the coast. The 356 Outlaw was driven by an ex-racer by the name of Baron. Showed us all that technique beats horsepower......

Why does that catch-phrase mean so much to buyers? - or maybe it doesn't?

You drive a car in the rain, it gets wet throughout the chassis etc., I understand that. But so-what?

Maybe the ultimate selling point would be "Never driven in rain, nor ever washed"...?

(Clearly I have nothing better to do with my time today ..)

Jason

I think it implies less chance of rust like 'California car' it does not mean it is true of course.

As for actually not driving your own car in the rain is about as crazy to me as floor mats or seat covers or dash matts.

I bought a 10 year old BMW once that had all that stuff on it and the owner proudly claimed "never driving in the rain". The owner also picked up a corner of the seat cover to show me the perfect leather seat.

I bought the car and while I was at his house I took all that stuff off and threw it in the trunk and then drove two hours home in the rain to get home.
Drove that car till it was a wore out and the dash was cracked and the seats worn and then bought Mercedes from another "protector of their investment" owner and did the same thing, God bless these people for saving their cars for me. I sure could not afford them new and they save them looking like new for ME, Yeah!

Matt Monson 10-31-2018 10:17 AM

^ chcuckling in agreement. Bought a low mi 1991 Subaru Legacy Turbo like that once. The car was freaking g perfect at 25 years old. Had the engine out for an STi replacement and on the track before the end of that first summer.
