As for actually not driving your own car in the rain is about as crazy to me as floor mats or seat covers or dash matts.

I bought a 10 year old bmw once that had all that stuff on it and the owner proudly claimed "never driving in the rain". The owner also picked up a corner of the seat cover to show me the perfect leather seat.

I bought the car and while i was at his house i took all that stuff off and threw it in the trunk and then drove two hours home in the rain to get home.
Drove that car till it was a wore out and the dash was cracked and the seats worn and then bought mercedes from another "protector of their investment" owner and did the same thing, god bless these people for saving their cars for me. I sure could not afford them new and they save them looking like new for me, yeah!

lol

The bravado is quite amusing to read.

In most cars unless you have a brand new spanking resto or alike, the weatherstripping seals are years or decades old. And when you do replace them eventually, even in a once in your lifetime ownership deal and find the inevitable rust, what then ? Leave it alone, just paint it over, who cares, it's not going to fall apart anytime soon, car's meant to be used, rattle can to the rescue. Riiiiiiight.

How much is rust repair done right again ?

I’m always ready for a repeat and welcome you as a passenger or Co-driver anytime.

Running targa Baja as we speak with blucille and others from the old gang. Might even get a ride along from a certain Brit photo-journalist that accompanied us in NH once.

Good times.

....well, it was technically rain.

We buy these cars so we can enjoy them. That definition of enjoyment is different to each of us. For some it means keeping it in pristine condition at all times, for others it is driving them hard all the time, and for the vast majority it is somewhere in the middle.

Yes, yes but .... for many, not all for sure, of us, a $ not spent on rust repair is a $ which can be spent elsewhere on these cars.

Fantastic! What tires are those? Do they do salt on the road in nova scotia?

Winter tires on 6" cookie cutters. I don't remember which brand. Yes, they have salt in Nova Scotia but this was not in Nova Scotia. The picture is from about 10 years ago. I was much younger then and the cars were much cheaper back then. I had to drive it half way across the country in January. It was fun. Would I subject the car to that again? No. Do I regret doing that? Absolutely not.

^^^^^
Back in the 60s I must admit I drove a 912 year round even in the snowy winter. I do not remember if much, or any salt was used back then. Now I avoid even driving any 930 in rain if possible, as I use an AWD Volvo which is safer, more easily replaceable / repairable, just in case and it does the job better, albeit may not be as much fun

Rain is not so bad if it has rained recently and the grime is already washed off the road otherwise it is a big job to get it off, especially the underside.

To me, thru the lense of resale, when decades of light built up of dust have accumulated from little or no rain use on areas other than regular service areas ( brakes, fluid change areas etc ) are a plus and help to determine the extent of / or if any previous repairs. I especially avoid driving in the rain any 930 if it is still original and uncleaned underneath since new.

Porsche cars are made of sugar and of you drive them they will melt, blah blah.
The car itself is made of metal and plastic, it can be fixed and improved for ever. You OTOH only get one go around. You're not really experiencing life if you are afraid of things that can be fixed.

dwelle 11-06-2018 01:28 PM

agreed. they're just cars...
