"Never Driven in Rain"
I was thinking of the expression "never driven in rain" and wondered why it was used a big selling point for the sale of a car.....
Why does that catch-phrase mean so much to buyers? - or maybe it doesn't? You drive a car in the rain, it gets wet throughout the chassis etc., I understand that. But so-what? Maybe the ultimate selling point would be "Never driven in rain, nor ever washed"...? (Clearly I have nothing better to do with my time today ..) Jason

Any 911 before the mid 70s isnt galvanized. They rust. No rain? No rust.

Lol, its funny you bring this up. My friends and I were having the same discussion at Rennsport a few weeks ago. I think anyone that is on these forums or is involved in driving their Porsche could careless about that. Truly for most of my group of friends its a turn off, I want a driver and I want to know it was owned by a driver. Not a person that lets it rot in a garage. Just a perspective from a group of Porsche guys. But, to each their own I have no hate for the guys that just want to park and look at the car. At the end of the day its your money and whatever makes you happy is all that matters. You know the old saying "its like not having sex with your girlfriend because your saving her for the next guy".

Not or never driven in the rain for a non-California person is equivalent of not ever driven/collector car that you cannot drive as its too valuable. A luxury I cannot afford. If your cars are your retirement plan (and I have a buddy who has some of those) more power to you.

There are threads over on F-chat about washing your car without using water.

Rust and filth.
If not rain driven (really, not mostly) then chances of both are lower. For those who like a clean car avoiding rain makes keeping it clean much easier. Very easy to have a weekend driver that is never in the rain and not just garage kept. Plenty of places go months without significant rain. |

After I spent a couple of years de-rusting my car back in the '80s I tried to never drive it in the rain again.
Keeping in mind that I drove the car to work most days. (20 miles each way). I drove a VW Beetle on the rainy days. If you have owned, for any length of time, and drive one of these older 911s you know of what I speak. BTW this was in Southern California.

A fellow Pelican has an '84 that his father bought new. Car has lived in LA its entire life. A couple years ago he pulled up a floorboard or trimpiece and found rust. Turned out to be pretty superficial, but that was for a galvanized, garage-kept, SoCal car. It's gotta be way worse for those who live in places where there's precipitation.
Edit: it's, its. Sometimes I hate autocorrect. Sticks in apostrophes even when I don't want them there.

Art of Racing in the Rain. Great book, and I recently saw someplace that it’s being made into a movie. It will be interesting to see how it handles the dog’s (major) part.
One can only hope Horrywood doesn’t totally screw it up as they have done with so many other (most of them, actually) good stories.

Rain.
When we picked up our car at the factory, we also
drove to a town "Ludwigburg"? which had a small show room. There was a 911 2.7 or 3.2 body on a post which had sat out there for several years. Did not notice any rust. I'll try to find some pics. Gerry

So I guess no one ever washes or washed their car either with water when proclaiming this. Interesting...I've met guys who never wash with soap, but they use water.

Im in central Scotland in the uk and don't drive my 911 in the winter or take it out in the rain for that matter.
If i have it out and a shower comes on i don't care you cant legislate for that. I want to keep my car corrosion free, but that doesn't mean i don't use it. I try to keep it dry and to be fair the only corrosion it has, is a small section at the bottom of the drivers door and a small section at the front of one of the front wings (fender). These will be cut out and repaired this winter, apart from that i have had the car apart when i purchased it 12 years ago when i had a kidney bowl and small section of B post repaired. Other than that the car is absolutely rust free and was used in the uk regularly for at least the first 15 years of its life. For anyone who's not familiar with our weather in Scotland, its damp and in the winters the amount of salt laid is horrendous. Car will be put away for storage next week till march 19. ![]()

This and similar waterless washing products will clean anything unless it's caked with dirt or mud from your offroading adventures.

I think the larger concern is water getting behind glass seals and slowly rotting hard to reach places. That said, I imagine that could happen in a poorly ventilated or wet garage.
I avoid the rain to the best of my ability but my car, on occasion, had been forced to see rain.
