Body shop won't return my parts, need advise

My body shop agreed to repaint my gas tank 3 months ago and now I can't get them to return it. They had my car for 2 years doing the paint work. The color of the gas tank was wrong for that year so they agreed to repaint it. They had someone come to my house and pick up the tank. After repeated promises, and then ignoring my emails and texts, I am looking for some advise on how to get my tank back.

They also took some parts off my car that I didn't notice until I was doing the interior. I confronted them about those parts and they said they would replace them. Fortunately, I took extensive photos of the car before I took it to them.

I let the shop know that I was going to share this experience with Porsche community.

I just want my parts back.

Read it through, then try to work something out with the shop before it escalates, and you're both twice as entrenched.

If they will not listen to reason, suggest a mediator or if they are completely belligerent talk to an Attorney.

Call it a loss and move on, you do yourself no favors keeping their name private.

Silly question but you called and emailed them but did you go see them in person and speak to the owner?

Did you document any of this in emails or text ie, what they would do for you and when, time money ect...

Post up their name and see if anyone else has had a problem with this shop.

If you documented it, and tried to retrieve them in person, file a claim in small claims court.

And post the name of the shop and name of the owner you tried to work it out with.

Pelican Forum is a great tool to out scammers and bad businesses.

But only out him/her after good faith attempts to allow owner to correct.

Sorry, yes, looks like he has the car back.

Name the shop and file the claim.

What is with these sketchy shops? Just blows my mind this stuff happens. Guess I've been lucky or smart in my vendor choices.

This kind of thing happens on the regular with shops that aren't accustomed to working on special cars. Think of all the Camrys and Regals that are out there getting pounded and painted. The owner never expect take-off parts back. In fact, many of the mechanics do a nice side trade selling parts.

Part of what you pay for when going to a specialist shop is the understanding that these are collectible cars now and that every nut and bolt is to be preserved.

I wondered what happened to that guy from the 10/2017 thread.
Looks like he went back and deleted all his posts on 4/2018

Unfortunately it’s international. We’ve seen and I’ve experienced a lot here in so cal. But I know from close friends of a lot in New England and surrounding. Online I see that in UK you’d be very very lucky if you found a solid paint outfit.

I traded e-mails with the shop yesterday and got the run around, I still have no clue what's going on with the gas tank and if they even have the replacement parts they took off my car. Sent another email this morning asking when I could pick up my parts or if they even have them. Still waiting for a reply.

I think it's smart not the put the shop on blast right off the bat. Why not go visit them in person? If they don't respond after a week of you trying to make contact, lawyer up (if it's worth the expense) and then let everyone know who these crooks are.

You're wasting your time.

Email, really, do you expect any results from that after you have, as you said, "confronted them" ?

Emails? You're kidding right? They're holding you hostage and you're sending them emails? I'd be in their face, one way or the other.

Do you want your parts back or not? They had your car FOR TWO YEARS doing paint? What were they doing for two years? What were YOU doing for two years? Two years? It's no wonder they feel like they can get away with not giving you your parts back.

Take action. Posting on PP is not taking action.

I’m floored at the number of people that take their car to a shop and don’t routinely check on progress in person.
