Just goes to show that it never hurts to go have a look. Congrats on your buy. Take a really good look at the kidney bowls. Those early cars always rust there.
If it were me, I would rip off the glass flares and get some 911R spec ones. I'm not sure there are steel ones out there, but worth a look. I like the manners of a SWB car and to me it's part of the point of an early car. Yes, you could also install the longer control arms. Requires new axles as well and probably a couple of other things I am forgetting. There are threads about it in Tech. When you post pictures, can we see some close ups of those rear wheels? |

Unless the car is riddled with rust, I think you did well! |
Thanks again guys. I need to shuffle the cars around to get this one on the lift, hoping this weekend I can do that. I poked around under the car and did not see any rust at all, not even in the battery tray area. I will get a better look on the lift and will post some pictures of it by next week. Matt I will post pictures of the rear wheels as well.
Replacing the flares is the right thing to do but it certainly will be the most expensive option. I am going to fix the important stuff first and get it on the road and see how I like her as an SWB. I have never driven one... |
Very shrewd buy Isf911, i knew you were going back when you said you On the fence...
If the car had been advertised later in the year it would have gone very quickly. I like it with the flares, i think install longer control arms, swap the axles, sort out the rear bumper and then drive it. Its got a cool vintage racer look already, and i love what looks like Dunkel blau on a SWB car. Please post some pics of the rear wheels, it looks like the ATS have new barrels ? Congrats, dont think it will take much to make this an interesting driver |
Did it have mud flaps on it?
|
msort81, thank you!
MAH77, yes it did have mud flaps...removed them last night. Some pictures of the rear wheels: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546606772.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546606772.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546606772.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546606772.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546606772.jpg |
So somebody cut the centers out of some sevens and rewelded them. I’d rather have the sevens...
|
Matt, looks that way. Personally, I don't care for them and would prefer Fuchs.
I did get under the car when I had the wheels off and there is still zero rust to be seen, even the kidney bowls look great. |
Some pictures in the wheel well. The undercoating chip and slight dent was my fault. The seller took the frozen caliper off and rested it on the spring plate. The ride home the car bounced up and down on it and slightly dented it. I should have put it back on and just pulled the pads out :(

Those early heat exchangers are in amazing condition. This car appears to be a bit of a score.
|
Nice score. Enjoy it!
|
I agree. It looks to be in great shape. Amazing given the location. Have fun with her.
|
Wow. Great find. Especially 1968-only interior items in great shape.
|
Wow, looks great! Kinda jealous but standing by for your in depth rust assessment.
|
Good score. Keep the mudflaps on it
|
I dont hate the Widened ATS 1s, but they are hard to find so in that sense its disappointing. It does remind me of the old / pre bubble days when we would do things unimaginable now.
The interior looks in really good shape, Cant believe that dash, it looks maybe a little warped but not split. Like NYNick i'm looking forward to your in depth assessment. +1 on the mudflaps ! Did the car come with much history ? I wonder if anyone at ESR knows it or can help with acquiring the Kardex. |
The only history I have on this car is the seller has owned it since 72. In 76 he modded it because he was racing it in local rallies. Which ones...I don't know. I could ask him, he seems to enjoy talking about the car and its past (nice guy). By the late 80s (1988 time frame) he lost interest and parked it in his heated basement (which was open to his garage, never saw a setup like that). There it sat for 30 years waiting for me.
He claims he has never driven it in snow or rain in his ownership. Not sure where to go to get more information and acquiring a Kardex. Yesterday I removed everything from the trunk and was poking around. Still have not found any rust. |
Not sure cardex means much on acar not numbers matching. Just enjoy it. It's not some long lost factory t/r.
