Surely you cannot bring the 996 into a backdating topic. |

69 Ghias couldn't do 135, unless you had some serious work done to it. Even then, it had to fall out of a plane to reach that velocity.
Hell, my 912 barely hit 120, downhill.

I assure you that it did. the 85hp was a 1776cc. Second engine was a 2176cc 145 hp. It took a lot longer to reach 135 but it certainly would, no reason for me to make things up lol. Car was pretty gutted and light. I think it maxed out at that speed due to the gearing and max rpms not changing between the two engines. One time i drove 135 mph in the middle of the night for about 15 minutes non-stop. I covered a lot of ground lol

![]() Of course, I owned my 912 in the early 70's. You know what they say? If you can remember anything from the 70's, you weren't there. It's all a bit foggy.

What were you running for wheels and tires?

dont remember the profile but the were empi 8 spokes on 145/15 and perhaps 185/15 rear. even with the 1776 engine i was destroying much larger hp cars. ITs all about the weight. As far as top end my 4th gear must have been tall enough combined with the rpm's to achieve it. Same tires, trans, and rpm's more or less for bigger motor so no surprise on the fact that its top speed was the same. That thing was a rocket. I won every single drag race besides one. Got a phat drag racing ticket at Dodger Stadium as well. That was fun. Car was scary on twisties so I stuck to straight line.

4.12 final drive with a .89 4th, 25.4" stock tire size and you're at 134mph. I guessed at a 6500 rpm redline. But, on the other hand, if you were running something like a 175/60/15, which is pretty common to mount on a fair of Fuchs, for example, then you're running a 23.2" tire. Now your top speed is only 122.8mph, but your speedo is going to tell you that you're tickling 135mph.
