back dated using fiberglass?
 

My car is all metal wide body fenders. I'm in the middle of backdating it and considering glass front rsr fenders with the light boxes already glassed in.
Would this bother any of you if buying it and maybe reduce interest? Does it reduce value or just make it less desirable? I wouldn't be caring if I were to keep this car forever but I plan at some point to let her go.

My opinion is less value than all steel

I know it reduces value but think it would make it less desirable also.

That’s kind of what I was thinking too but researching I found a backdated 85’ with front fenders in glass sell for $82k and it was a nice car but....

Less desirable = reduced value

There’s a butt for every seat.
But you are reducing the potential pool. Which usually means less competition. Which in turn means less value.

Metal is worth it.

My car has 930 steel flares in the rear but I went FG fenders up front for an RSR look. Most people use steel 930 flares up front but the profile of the flare is wrong. The RSR has a more square look. Here's a nice one at $100k current bid so far that has FG panels, but agreed that some people may not like the glass.

Preference, value and selling price ranking (IMO of course)

1) Steel
2) All fiberglass
3) Fiberglass bonded to steel


In the case of category three its always a deal killer. Steel and fiberglass expand and contract at different rates. No way for the "bonded" to steel parts to remain in tact for long years. I would avoid it like the plague.

I've been anti-fiberglass for decades. But recently a few RSR looks on BAT have brought very strong prices despite fiberglass flares & front body panels.

The big issue with fiberglass is that it's difficult to make it look like it's not fiberglass. But carbon fiber seems like it's a better alternative to produce a great result. It works pretty well for Singer.

Carbon fiber is far from fiberglass.

Depends. If it's autoclaved 'dry' carbon fiber, it's super strong and light, but there's a lot of lesser quality "carbon fiber" out there.

I do think if you are back dating to an R replica the consideration of fiberglass in the project is different.

I’m planing on doing an R style car, minus the short wheel base, with all fiberglass.
I have the full EB Motorsports kit. Only metal will be the rear quarters.
Light weight is the goal. I don’t think the fiberglass will hurt the value. Oh wait; I don’t care about the resale value.

Novel approach

All I am going to say that all of Rauh Welt cars are glass. His cars do not have any issues selling over $100k.

Porsche 911R tribute cars are glass as well. They seem to be selling around $90k-$110k.

Porshce made the 911R with glass.

If the car is built right no one have an issue with it.

I was really mostly speaking of fenders and light box areas. Those are not glass I don't think?
