We have a shortened G-50, had Patrick do it years ago, going to mate it up to a a high HP engine at some point. Like others, I own cars with 901s, 915s and a G-50 car. For my 81, I'm sticking with the 915, but I have both a Haggerty & Wevo shifters to see what I like best and have a Wevo shift coupler. As why people put G-50 in their ads, quite simple, because people want to expand their cars coming up on "Searches", like when you go to Craigslist, and some A-hole uses every car name in the bottom of their ads so it pops up more. That bothers me when I'm searching Porsche and a fricking Hyundai pops up because some dealer did that, much more than when I see G-50 in the title. Remember, not everyone knows these cars like we do..

Those are gocarts, not Miatas. The young Deez must be in front of the pack. I can't place him, but the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as they say. How long before he can reach the clutch in a Miata? How old is the young Deez? Sometimes I wished I'd have had a son. No regrets. I have a beautiful daughter! Actually, I haven't wished or missed a son, but you make me think about it! Enjoy him all your life! I'll enjoy watching just vicariously.

He got a great start from outside pole in that race. Nice gap by turn 1.
He is 15 and just got his learners permit. First lesson is today; Poor instructor :D
You can race Miatas at 13 per the series rules. He won't start until 16 because of CA track rules.

I remember the learners permit at 15.5 with an adult in the car. In my case, I'd already built the fastest car in town, 68 Camaro that went into a river (at my age 14 when I bought it for $400.00). By 15.5 I drove to school one day, got out in front of the whole HS while Mom got in the driver's seat to take the car back home With a 327 and camel back heads 2002, and 4 speed she made a spectacle in front of the whole Yerington High School. Later I changed out the diff to 373 ratio, but that day it still had original 307 ratio. With the highway gears she had to rev up to get it going.

With those N50 15 inch rear mags and tires she ended up lugging the motor in the end, which made those tires chirp rubber for as long as she was on that street in front of us til the car finally got going. The whole HS was eating lunch on the front lawn. It took a long time to get going. I wasn't embarrassed, for it was only a testament to the car. Nobody in HS could top that. It was nothing more than a REP builder, and I was still a Sophomore. Just some Muscle car and learner permit memories.

Derrick,
that is a very odd photo. Why is there a blurred vertical section on the left side? It's obviously not a depth of field effect from fast lens. Is your sensor dirty?

It's a POS iphone. 1 out of 50 pictures is ok. I've learned to live with it because I'm not carrying a camera with me.

If your kid wants to open wheel race, there's really no better way in the US than to get into spec Miata. That's because of Formula Mazda and how much support Mazda gives everything. But that's a path to Indy.

If one wants to go F1, then the previously mentioned F3 is the way to go after karting. And to get into it, you've got to go race in Europe.

My partner's kid has followed the path and so far hasn't made it. He won the F3 national title in Australia 4 years ago. He's tested with a couple of teams at Silverstone but nothing came of it. He raced a BMW in GT3 on dad's dime for 2 seasons with little success and then one of the Euro teams picked him up to race LMP3. He won the 4 Hours of Monza outright, but shortly after that left the series because his co-drivers kept crashing the car and he just couldn't afford to stay in the series with all the DNFs and car repairs. Now he works as a driving instructor for AMG in Australia and grabs a ride here and there when he can. He hasn't given up the dream yet, but realizes it's likely not to be F1 and more likely will be sportscars and endurance racing. He just turned 23.

Funny, I deleted that whole part of my post about testing the waters in Miata and then shipping him to Europe for F3; if he shows potential. Otherwise it's off to college and let the dream go. Europe is about 25% less than here to run F3.
We talked with a team owner about Formula Mazda a couple weeks ago. But there really isn't a lot of competition on the west coast.IMO.
I think the Miata is the cheapest testing ground to find out if racing is worth pursuing. I don't think it is, but it's not my life.

Joey Hand ended up making a decent carer, and living, out of racing in the GT classes.
He's got a win at Le Mans and Platinum ranking.

I don't have the blurred column. It was just that pic. I took three or four pics and that was the only clear shot of him. They are coming into that turn at about 62 MPH. He's probably still doing 50+ MPH there.

If you in CA Deez, let me know the city. Planning a trip home late August/early Sept. I'll be crating and driving from NV to OC/LA. Might have time to swing by if you're in the area or on the way.

I'm in N.CA off HWY 80. You won't be passing me unless you are taking HWY80 East and then South on HWY99 or I5. Too bad it would be cool to put another face to the person.

Joey had to get a factory ride and run in DTM for a few years first though.

Let me do a little homework and ping you privately. There's a new open wheel spec class coming up and I've got some contacts in CA who are involved. I don't remember what it's called and I don't know how far along they are on it, but they are looking to campaign 3-4 cars in 2020 or 2021 depending on how long they take to get up to speed. There will be seats.

Yeah, I Usually do 395 down to OC through Bishop and San Bernadino. My freight forwarder is in Carson called Fujitrans. While in Costa Mesa I stay with a life long college friend who still has a 73S after 30 years. On the other hand, I have gone the other route for other reasons once. This trip I may try to get a few parts to load in the crate if I have the money and if I find them on the way down to CA.
Therefore, all options are open, and if parts I need are on the way, I will definitely veer in other directions to pick them up. I won't have too much time, but if possible, I may pass by your way, and it would be nice to attach your face to the Deez, even see the young Deez future race car prodigy.

I haven't even booked my ticket yet. Also I need to put some WTB wish list on Classifieds. I'm not too cashed up at the moment so I'm shy.

915-g-50

I know, I'm late to the party...been away from my "puter"... Back in the day, when a truck load of P-cars would come in from port, we would walk out to the truck with a couple of big index cards and start copying down the vin, color, options etc. for inventory files. When the first 87 cars showed up, the only think I noticed was the weight increase...Funny, every year we would guess how Porsche would make the car quicker. Often times a mix of weight savings, power increase, aerodynamics or gear ratio changes. We were quite surprised to see them increase the weight.
Anyway years passed, and we didn't give much thought or attention to the difference between the 86 and 87 model. When we appraised or bought one, it was a $ difference of one year...No biggie. This continued into the 90's when the late great Bruce Anderson wrote another introspective 911 article, and decided to put a wedge between the 915 and the G-50.
Many dealers were pissed, as he just reduced the value of so many customers cars and dealers inventory with the stroke of his mighty pen. Many of us called him the day we read the article and ask him if he started drinking again! His perception came from rebuilding the 915 transmissions on higher mileage California cars that had been on the road from 1972-1986.
Of course he had seen fewer G-50's needing rebuild! They had only been around since 1987! Anyway that's how it started, and when the internet got into full swing it became an redundant marketing tool. Today, we rebuild many G-50's...The parts are more expensive, they require assistance of another mechanic to get from the transmission jack to the bench, take a bit more time to work on, and require a bigger hammer!
Whats most important when considering a 911 purchase is not which trans...It's what the condition is.
I enjoy 'em both, but when a 915 is properly set up, it's pretty slick to shift!

Matt has been giving me good tips for years now. They have all been good!! He's never received one from me however. I was planning to give him a good one since New Years, for some good advice on a 915 tranny I picked up, cleaned up on the cheap. Seems I'm doing some horse trading, so I won't get cash back on that, but I won't forget all the tips I got from Matt over years. I will have a big fat tip for him when the time is ripe! Better sooner than later!

That sounds pretty interesting and very experiential! Sounds like Porsche did it fairly well both former and latter. I much liked your analysis. True Porsche loyalty you retain, and so do many, even I.

Only 180 dollars in the account, so 150 dollars worth of Tri Tip is gonna go on the kitchen table -- unless you spend it on car parts with it on the sly. Take the tip Matt. Its not payment, even though you are worth every penny! I've never spent a dime on you. This money is only for Tri tip block. It's only for meat! Period! Now PM that address, so I can send the meat money! Don't be bashful, just take the GIFT. Enough said, except that it is my pleasure, not to be repetitive. Ever heard about the real McCoy? When I was still a freshman in High school, I took two friends out with me to check my traps in the bush. We were all family friends and fellow Baptist church members, Danny and Mike. Danny was a grade ahead, Mike a grade below. Out in the bush, Mike says should we show Bernie the real McCoy?? Danny said -- Shut your mouth! So I said -- Nah!...What's the real McCoy??

They proceeded to do a 69er on each other, and after Danny chased Mike around and buried the tip! I was just an innocent bystander, but I was advised to keep my mouth shut. Monday morning every one at school knew about the real McCoy! That got me into a fight at the park with Danny. I was winning because i was a freestyle wrestler and took him down, but his friends pulled me off, so in the end I lost and was out boxed in a fight at the park with the whole school watching.

Danny is deceased since senior year graduation when rolled a Ford Bronco with a car load near Wilson canyon. To this day, I don't know where Mike is. Family moved away. All I can say is, when you dip the tip, it comes out brown! I remember that very well from youth, and this a true story!!

What do you use for smoking wood? I smoke every weekend on the Weber. NEVER do I use charcoal, only wood. Cherry, Maple, even have 30 year whiskey barrels from Scotland. I mix and match.

Damn! Dawn and getting 5 am in the mountains. Had a nap before though. I better have another one!

Matt Monson 07-21-2019 12:05 PM

Bloody hell Bernie! I didn’t need to hear that story.

I also use a Weber. I mostly use Apple because it’s what I’ve got. My property used to be an orchard 40 years ago. There’s still a few trees here and when we bought it 6 years ago nothing have been pruned in years. There’s was a ton of dead wood that needed removal to bring the trees back. I’ve got a decent little pile of it still. I do start it with briquettes, but once it’s good and hot I transition to just Apple.

I know that. I wanted my statement to come across as a question. Wondering if the locals have caught on the the goodness of a good smoked tritip?

I finally stepped up and order an Old Hickory Ultraque last week. Should be here in two/three weeks. I’m done with the pellet and going professional smoker.
