I also use a Weber. I mostly use Apple because it’s what I’ve got. My property used to be an orchard 40 years ago. There’s still a few trees here and when we bought it 6 years ago nothing have been pruned in years. There’s was a ton of dead wood that needed removal to bring the trees back. I’ve got a decent little pile of it still. I do start it with briquettes, but once it’s good and hot I transition to just Apple.

I wish I could accommodate you. My long time rich neighbor Nomura san just informed me Osaka city cut down sh-tloads of maple last year, and he brought me a 3/4 ton load on his company truck. Apparently it seems, the city didn't have the money last year to dispose of all these logs. We don't plan to spend our time or money to get them out here to the mountains. We will take them for free if the city finds it financially doable to deliver them out here. Kaede is Maple in Japanese. I had a student last year named Kaede who got cancer. Last week I smoked some chicken legs with Sakura and first time Kaede. Best smoke yet in my opinion.

Dunno. I don’t socialize with many of the red hat wearing locals out here. I mostly socialize with other transplants.

I’m getting ready to harvest my boar. I just want both sows pregnant before I kill off his genes. And the Apple harvest so I can finish him on orchard forage.

I was talkin with the Raw man about 6 months ago via PM. I was tellin him how I missed the mesquite coals that I locked onto while a 4 year stint in Dallas. He never replied about that. Obviously the Raw man doesn't bbq or smoke meat. I don't doubt that he strokes meat, but he definitely doesn't smoke meat so don't Axe him about that, and he's in Texas too! Imagine that! I was only thinkin how to import some of that mesquite i.e. just hoping for some feedback. Got absolutely Zilch.

Fuggeedaboudit!!

Fence post oak is really popular in Texas. I think mesquite is a bit more Soutjwestern. When I buy wood, it’s usually mesquite.

I've never heard of fence post oak. Maybe that's hwhat the oaakies from miskogie used, but who would smoke with that these days unless one had nothing else to burn? There would be no natural oil in the wood left, just residue of donkey piss over decades.

Commercially, mesquite is known to be the best smoking coals. It mainly comes from Mexico however.

Even better, fresh dry wood with oil still retained, no coals with any additives, Its free, its natural and it can be blended. I haven't experienced any Mesquite in about 30 years, so I am at a loss.

The breed is called Post Oak. It's sometimes called White Oak as well. It's widely available in the south.

Shira Kashi we call White Oak here. Shiro is white, Kashi is Oak. I've cut and split lots of them. I'll burn it but I wouldn't even dream of smoking with it. Even the BTU value is lower than the 3 other species of OAK I normally burn. Oak is good for smoke if nothing better. I'm spoiled here. When I go get wood I only have to choose among the 3 or more species of oak. My father in NV had a lifelong choice of Cottonwood (say it 3 times).

Burning is one thing. Smoking is another. Either way I'm spoiled. Bought /brought a splitter in via crate about 5 years ago off hometown CL. Got Wood?

I don’t think so hard about it. I smoke something about once a month. Texans are Texans. They eat a lot of beef brisket, frequently smoked with no rub. I am more of a pork and chicken guy. And I like my sauces and runs. I’m not hardcore about any of it.

I do need to dig a pit and line it. We are doing a suckling pig whole soon. I’m going to bury it.

That's what they call a PIG OUT where I'm from. I didn't know that, but about 20 years ago coming home Mom says stop in Smith Valley, we're all there having a pig out. I say, wtf is a pig out? Learned on the way home, bury the pig in hot coals for a day, then resurrect porky the pig!

Hey Deez! Don't know much about that pro smoker machine you ordered. It sounds interesting to say the least. Would be interesting to hear how it goes once you get it. Sorry about the pork jokes. I realize you don't regularly shop there. You did say you occasionally drop in though at the Walmart.

I smoke meat every weekend in the mountains. We got venison, wild boar, but usually we do chicken or beef... whatever we have on the day. Keep on with the new smoker and lets see if any feedback comes to bear on good smoking techniques.

We live for a good bbq and some good meat, smoked is preferrable. Some red wine isn't out of the question either.

"The real McCoy"

Me, and I'm sure a few others here will never look at those words like we used to.

Thread has taken a left turn.

Actually Y'all are barkin up a storm on Sugar's thread. The thread is titled that he wants to punch someone every time he hears them say G-50. I think he wants to punch you too now!

Some of us were only trying to ease his pain, change the subject a little. Even Deez said -- this is Sug thread so feel free to say whatever you like. I had some inquisitive G-50 question a few pages ago. Only JMS935 responded, but I was hoping to learn more. Where were you then?

Just curious, what did the real McCoy used to mean to you, if anything? As I said, knockin down big oak trees in the woods, especially ALONE, is what it means to me. The rest is just history, but juan was begging for that one.

Hi John,

I watched the whole documentary. I had no idea that was where the name came from. It was like watching Bonanza when I was young, but this one was way before my time. I guess an apology is in order. I don't know how Danny and Mike came up with that name.

I didn't mean to pollute the minds of other members here. Telling this story jogged my memory, so now I can correct a couple details. Danny was not one, but two grades ahead of me. Probably that was how he beat me up and demanded I take back what I said in public at the park. As said, I was beating him to pulp until his friends pulled me off. He had a bit more rage in him and help from friends. I was only ever an innocent bystander. Juan said -- sometimes the tip is all it takes! Danny, though from a family of shorter people was hung like a horse. If he could have, he'd have sunk the whole Salmon! Hence the Juan joke -- sometimes the tip is all it takes?

Now back to G-50! Whose got some good stuff left on this thread? Matt Monson is going to have to at least take some lessons or consult you, on extrordinair pork smoking...Me too!

Will this clutch work on a G-50?

Tough question for me. Thanks in advance for any guidance to answer! Posting a few pix, not great ones though. I can take better ones if necessary with numbers.

I ordered this set up 10 years ago to go with a 3.8 RS 964 to be coupled with an R 50-50 Ruf BTR III 6 speed. I've decided to abandon the NA WAY and get back to Turbo. Ronnie is gonna be proud of me!

Whether this clutch will fit or be good I have absolutely no idea. The flywheel may clear the trans. case, but just looking at it, it will be a tight fit so its hard to know. This flywheel fits into the trans case but with very little clearance when I eyeball it.

Trans and chassy are 1989 911 configuration. Not sure at all about the clutch. I thought I ordered it for G-50 10 years ago. There's that # again! Don't punch me please!

It will work fine. Unless you go over 500hp on the turbo don’t sweat it.

914 doesn't have that kind of tunnel. It's mid-engine and the gearbox is in the behind. It does require cutting the rear trunk a little bit though. Kind of like installing the sequential gearbox last night into my Cayman...

Unbelievable Matt! Did you build that box yourself? Last night means you might have been up into wee hours of the morning trying to finish a job. When I was 15 years old Mom would be yelling out the door -- either come in for dinner, or go to bed! I would be out under the 68'Camaro with a light even with a foot of snow on the ground.

Then, I bought a set up from an older guy for 200.00. Muncie M21 rock crusher, 11 inch clutch, aluminum bell housing with a Mr. Gasket in line shift linkage. I had to cut out left side of the console to get the linkage in. I tinned it in and carpeted over top. I replaced the original Saginaw 4 on the floor. Had a lot of fun after that. Also changed out 307 diff gear to 373. Just always loved being under a car. Still do! It is one thing that relaxes me other than some red wine. One day it would be cool to see more of what you do either info or pix.

Nah, I have a guy. ADDvanced would consider me a poseur. There's often confusion around here about what I actually do. I own a gearbox parts manufacturing company. I run the the day to day operations; warehousing the parts, handling sales, etc. etc. I have a partner in Australia who runs the factory and all manufacturing operations. We have an engineer on staff who designed this box. What I had him do was use the original Cayman bellhousing and crownwheel and pinion set and redsign the whole thing. We cast a new magnesium section with a foundry in NZ and then CNC machined the rest of it. Internally it looks a lot like the GT3 conversion we did a few years back. We reused some of the same parts.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-autocross-track-racing/722367-little-show-tell-those-who-missed-pri.html

Once the box was finished, I purchased a Cayman and shipped it off to one of my better customers. He's a former crew chief for TRG and Alex Job, as well as a PMNA employee. He's won Daytona, Lemans, etc with top teams in the business. He's got a couple of guys who work for him that are doing the heavy lifting on this. The car is at his shop in Vegas, and given that it's peak race season, they are working on it an hour or two in the evenings after they get their other stuff done. It's been about a 2 year process to reach this point and I'm getting quite excited to fly in and drive the car home.

That's so awesome Matt! I wish you Godspeed with it all! It was interesting that you employ also Kiwis and Aussies in the business. I like them both, but especially the Kiwis. There are are some cleaver Kiwis I've met and they are a different breed. For instance, my good friend and neighbor in the mountains still holds the national record for quarter mile in a holden with chev 305 motor he built at young age as an engineer in training and poor, 30 years ago. He is now a qualified engineer. Ever heard about the fastest Indian? Google that, but that guy his mutual friends and family know, and that small town isn't a far stones throw from his on the South island. . I've seen that documentary. This Kiwi even invaded US Air Force base with his Indian motorcycle, just to run in on their property. All was overlooked because some Higher up officer saw his Indian in a popular mechanics magazine.

Anyway, I like the Kiwis! The Aussies I like, but a different breed. The Kiwis are tighter than a snapper's ass. Aussies are tight too, but sometimes you gotta watch your back.

Thank you Matt for sharing that. Very cool, innovative stuff and way over my head. I enjoy learning and hearing about it all.
