Anyone want to test drive a 911 for me in the Bay Area?
I live about 1000 miles away and don't want to buy a car sight unseen. They always look great in pictures and of course the sales rep says the car is perfect. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I'd feel better having someone put eyes on it in person, before committing to it and spending time/money flying out to get it.
Please PM me. Thank you. |

Send it to a shop for a full PPI and let them be your eyes and ears. They will put it through its paces on the road as well. Seems like just as big a crap shoot asking a stranger on the internet to test drive it for you, as taking the dealer at their word. At least a mechanic shop that does PPIs does this for a living, which can’t be said for whoever might offer to go test drive it for you.

If it is a late model car, I recommend using a local Porsche dealer. I have used a dealer 3 separate times.
The first time I looking at a 2008 Cayman S being sold at a high-line used car dealer in Chicago which is 850 miles from my home. The Dealer, Napleton Porsche, performed a complete inspection and the Cayman passed with flying colors and I owned it 3 years with no troubles. The second time a Cayman R came to market, also in Chicago being sold by another high line used car dealership. I got Napleton to once again perform a PPI. This time they reported some undisclosed small paint repairs and they noted some over-revs. In addition they reported that the car must have spent a large majority of its life on a race track and autocross courses as the computer showed many hours at full throttle. I passed on the car. I later found a 991,also in Chicago, being sold by an individual. For the third time, Napleton performed a PPI. The car passed and 3 years later is still gracing my garage. All the PPI were less than $600.00 if my memory serves me. The service manager remembered me and treated me accordingly. There is no doubt in my mind that the money I spent at Napleton was well spent. Food for thought. |

I did a test drive for a Pelican member that Iive 2,000 miles away.
Drive it from the owner place to mine, put it on the lift and took pictures. Find out that the owner was in the army and he brought the car back from Germany. Turn out that he knew my best man son... Very small world. Following my reports, the car went to a shop for a PPI. The new owner flew down, stay overnight at my place and the next day we took the car to the moving company. He got a great deal. So go for it, but do not skip a sale conditional PPI.

^^^ I agree with deemsriddle. If it’s a later model car a dealer would work just fine, I was assuming a classic 911, in which case I would prefer a mechanic that specializes in servicing and inspecting those cars.

Carlsen is right there for a dealer.
What about Pmax? Isn't that his hood?

Also, if you want an independent, Heyer Performance and Modderman Service are close by and well thought of.
