I have never bought a car from Canada and while Google says importing it is no problem, my concern would be if buying at a distance via the Internet that if there was some material misrepresentation of the car or other fraud-related issue, I wouldn't even begin to know the appropriate legal channels to pursue action if warranted.

I guess the same issue applies across state lines but I guess there is some base comfort in knowing I'd have some measure of protections (which I imagine are minimal regardless).

There's no protection up here..it's how we pay for our health care. :)

They're not minimal they're non-existent. You're buying a 40 year old used car from a private party over the internet.

I get there's fear of buying from a "foreign country". But in reality buying from Buffalo or from Toronto is not any different for cars in question. If they're a POS, they're a POS and you have no recourse on either side of the border.

I spend a lot of time in Ontario. Have for 25 years. Of course it's not that difficult to import a car from Toronto to Buffalo. You just can't convince 90% of the people in the US of this fact, and those are the ones bidding on BaT.

Hell, the vast majority of Americans have zero knowledge of your entire country. This coming from someone whose wife and kids are Canadian. Canadians are way more informed about the US than the other way around. Much more informed in fact.

What's the population? They have different currency? Don't they speak French? Aren't you afraid of the polar bears? Isn't it cold up there all the time?

So now on BaT, you have to sell your car AND educate the buyers about Canadian importation. One more step most American buyers don't want to bother with. There are plenty of cars right here in the US, they say.

It's hard enough buying a car on an auction site. Add importing it from a foreign country with polar bears and tundra, and you limit your bidders.

Like I said earlier, it's very easy, but people's default setting is laziness. Oh well, their loss.

As for stereotypes, it goes both ways. I too have spent a lot of time up there. The typical Canuck thinks 28 million Americans die on the steps of a hospital every year. And for God sake's stop wearing Speedos on Maine's beaches. OK this applies only to Quebecers who aren't all that Canadian, but still. :)

Yeah, when my Canadian buddies start busting my American chops, I just bring up the CAD. That shuts 'em up every time.:)

I have followed BAT for a while, and I have not been able to see any logic behind the prices yet. Reading the comments, it says you ended up selling it privately off BAT, so did it eventually sell? BTW, $78,500 USD is like almost $100,000 CAD eh?

Regarding importing and exporting. Importing from US to CAD is a huge PIA. Have to check the RIV (Registrar of Imported Vehicles), safety inspections (roll the dice based on how much the mechanic feels like juicing to give you a clean inspection), 48 hour waiting period at the border, insurance binders, etc. I have done it a couple of time.

Exporting to US seems to be a piece of cake, I sold a VW Van to a guy from Washington State (I am in BC) and he literally just drove from my house to the border with no plates, and they let him right thru the border, and insured it when he got into Washington, NP.

Regarding why your car fizzled out at $78.5, I have a couple of ideas. Definitely the marketing, those other cars had the artsy shots. Its also the decals, having an R-Gruppe sticker on a car adds $$$ instantly. Some of the attention to detail regarding the seats (Early S style seats always boost the price. Your yellow 911 is a sweat car, great, but lacking a few custom touches that tastefully done really add personality. No trim on front bumper, perlon carpets, all black interior, no sporty seat belts with the racing seats, some detailing in the engine bay (stock air filter hides a lot of the cool stuff you had in there). Maybe you were going for the clean look, but it was a little generic. Also, build pics never seem to add value , most people have no idea what they are looking for. I would also hazard a guess that most people who buy a $120K+ vehicle on BAT have no idea what the inside of a gear box looks like, so thats just a wasted photo. The good things were that you managed to maintain a positive thread thru the buying process. Sometimes the thread goes sideways and that can kill you, but yours seemed OK.

A question for you, how were BAT folks to deal with? What made you decide to list on BAT? Did they take the car the first time you submitted it, or did it take a couple of tries? How long did the process take from the time they accepted your submission to the time you submitted all of the pictures, wrote the add materials, etc. Were they very helpfull, like did they walk you thru the process or was it like submitting a car to any other electronic sales board. I wonder how their process would compare to say selling the car at Barrett Jackson or something? Would love to get some feedback on your experience with those guys.

25+ years old, piece of cake. Show up with a bill of sale and title/registration and it's all you need.

21 years old or newer - both DOT and EPA standards to worry about. Emissions, safety compliance, plus odometer/speedometer in miles vs kms. I don't know if it's still the case, but once upon a time, those had to be converted to miles to meet US standards. I believe that is no longer the case, but I'm not sure. Kind of moot anyway since most newer cars have a toggle between the two.

21-25 ears old, no EPA to worry about but still DOT to worry about. Why is EPA 21 but DOT is 25? One of life's great mysteries.

Wasn't the 25 year rule lobbying spearheaded by Mercedes among other European manufacturers to stop non-US cars being imported and undercutting their new car sales, and has little to do with emissions?

I bought my E30 in Toronto and drove home coming through Detroit, car was 25 years old by 1 month (they use actual manufactured date), stopped for a quick drug smuggling inspection and signed my paper in 5 minutes. I'm not even sure they actually checked the date.

I don't know the genesis of it. But I'm 100% sure it has nothing to do with emissions or safety and everything to do with the right lobbyists greasing the proper politician hands.
