Not taking sides... if sold for that much, good on the seller, but I'm having trouble seeing value here.

well Ron, that's the story. Pics of the acquired motor are same -- single injector etc. Send you a shot of my original Motronic btr III ECU. No longer have that motor, just the corroded original computer. You'll see at least what a btr III came with. Motor had twin injectors, and HUGE Stainless fuel rails, not to mention some serious multiple fuel pumps. Got pics of those but not tonite. Have to respect the Valve man and his thread too -- not to detract from it.

Typical!!! Can't tell you how much attention my 928GTS gets and I have as many people chase me down asking me to sell as they do my 964's. Most people look at the 964's and pick the 928 over it as the better looking car.

(This would be the marginal end of the market)

To my mind the 964 was one of the ugliest (thus good Singer donor car)
but one of the most competent (but to an ugly car, just not as attractive as some other years, so for that reason also not worth as much )

Also, many cars that would have been chopped up in the few years before, instead became bid up auction material.

The rest, the good ones, will always have value as long as there are the right people (however long that will be)

The other effect is that a special car that would have taken many months to find the right buyer, instead often quickly found a buyer (any buyer) in the feeding frenzy.

The frenzy has settled out. The marginal cars and marginal buyers have cooled.
For the most part well said and aI agree except the looks.

I still have numerous people looking for a good 964. The problem is finding one that doesn't need $20k+ worth of work. I find most of the younger generations that want an air-cooled 911 find the 964 most attractive.

Car not only has a salvage title but has the early engine so most likely needs a costly rebuild. $40k is almost too much for this car maybe $35k if it had a full engine rebuild with updated heads and no salvage title I could find a buyer for the car at $65k easily.

Let’s put it this way, if you’re a buyer and you happened to come across the right car for you in your desired color combination, with your desired option plus the condition you seek...you will pony up and pay period. If you’re just shopping for any average air cool Porsche then you may end up with what looks like a great deal at first but once you start dumping money and time into you may begin to understand why there is such a price disparity between cars. Yes asking prices have cooled but will we see very nice low mileage (or average to low mileage) cars at $20-35k including 930’s....I doubt you will see that again.

Used to be that a performance build of a 911 was $70k all day long.
Thats when you could buy an SC for $6k

Then prices went up

Regarding the 964
One of the positive things looks wise about the 964 is the integrated bumpers versus the look of an after thought.
From that perspective the 964 was almost a return to the pre 74 era. I think that is one of the things that the younger crowd likes, and, I don't find it a negative.

For some reason though, with stock wheels I just dont like the look of a 964

But put even a little bit deeper wheel on that car and it seems to transform it.
I think this guy gets a lot of young guys hot for a 964
(the ammo car wash guy on youtube)

Young guy here.

It's 2019. Whether it's black, white, brown, yellow, bumper shocks or not, I'm hot for any 911

I do wish I didn't sell my cobalt blue 964 in 2015, right before they went straspheric, but c'est la vie.

Should be able to buy it again for $20k next year though according to this thread so I'm good

Goal posts moving again. Not along ago it was "we'll never see driver quality" under $30K. Now it's we'll never see "low mileage" under $30 again.

What's your definition of average miles?

My point about that one isn't the price itself, but the change in price. It went from $50 to $40. As the old saying goes, the trend is your friend.

LOL in your dreams. Any nice 964 coupe especially in cobalt will hold its value where they are right now. I wouldn't count on prices falling. Just too few of them remaining, maybe 2000 coupes in total still in the US and many are dogs with fleas. They might dip for a while but the only 964's dropping in value have hidden issues needing extensive repairs. They are just settling to where they should have been all along a $40k car with $20k+ in needs. like the green car isn't worth buying it will never be worth what you have to put into it. The salvage title will always hold it back. The days of the 964 being cheap are over.

Now the fools that bought these cars to make a profit get what they deserve. You buy these because you like them otherwise you are just gambling at this point. That ship has sailed.

I agree with the stock wheels for the most part. The cup I's aren't bad the speedlines are probably IMO one of the nicest wheels they ever used on an air cooled although the old fuchs in the deep dish 15" in 9" or 11" width were quite spectacular.

I like the fikse's on mine in 18" 8&10" widths.

Image won't load??

BTW the Amazon car sold for decent money and is in my friends shop now having work done. I will be checking it out later or early next week. There is so much more to these than just the purchase price. AT the end of the day you either spend up for a needs nothing car or buy low and dump money into them. In the end you spent the same amount.

Your point it always the change in price. The problem is you pick all the turds, high miles, and s title cars that were overpriced to start with. It doesn’t prove anything about the market. It only proves there are dreamers everywhere.

I love all the old trading cliches "the trend is your friend"...

"hit the bid Sid"
"hit the bid or hit the road"
"don't catch a falling knife"
"its a sea of red"
"don't fight the trend"
"buy the rumor sell the news"
"sell to the greedy, buy from the fearful"
"Economists have predicted 7 out of the last 3 recessions"

"Fear, that's the other guys problem".... Winthorpe

Makes me miss the days on the trading floor. None of that exists anymore and we've lost that slice of capitalism.

The 964 motor is also quite sought after vs 993. Have an ol' friend here looking for a solid core for a decent price. He don't need intake or exaust. heat exchangers etc, Does need distributors. He will build a 4.0 liter motor for a customer. He asked me to find one. PM me if you have one and can crate it to a warehouse in Long Beach.

Sorry and forgot to say, if you can only pallet it to Carson (LB), that would be OK or even deliver it to my freight forwarder there, they will build the crate to Japan. These days crates need steel frames and chip board sides etc due to insects and international shipping protocol, unless the wood is treated and has stamps verified by shipping protocol. My guys there can build the crate at 200 dollars my expense or that of my friend.

Show me the facts...cars with less than 60k miles in very nice condition that have sold for under $30k. Cars that are driver quality are subjective to opinion. I’ve seen some cars described as driver quality and in my opinion are in much need of work for my standards. Best way for you to prove your point is to get actual sales data with photos and description of cars that have been sold in the past 6 months otherwise it’s your opinion and hope your using as your base for the statements you make.

There is no standardized metric for a car, its all subjective. That's the point of the whole thread.
