Paint dilemma... Need the braintrust

Thanks all, problem solved. I decided to keep the car as original as possible.

I would definitely go with paint correction first. There are some amazing detailers out there. Think AMMO is in your region. Document it all. It's only original once

They can match paint up pretty good these days with a little practice with that hand help computer paint matcher thing even though they call it something else. If it were mine and if you were assured that there would still be defects under the new clear coat I would remove your existing panels and take the time to match the paint correctly and just bolt them back on when done. It is a good idea to document what was done like the previous poster stated.

2k miles,... must leave original then.
Only a cut and buff perhaps.
Never REPAINT AT ALL...All repaints suck..
ALL new paint is brittle and chips and Never the same as the highly Toxic German factory paint.

All repaints don't suck. You get what you pay for.

Larry will be detailing the car and we will correct the hood regardless. I was specifically interested in thoughts about the effect on value with watch option. Will one option preserve the most value versus the option that is most likely to hurt the value.

Well if it still looks kinda crappy after you have sunk some money in it with a detail then you are just throwing money away in my opinion. I would rather have a nice looking hood that I am going to see all the time while driving than an original one with defects. My 2 cents.

Try your best with correction but don't paint anything!

Find someone that can match it. New hood or strip down so hood measures original. It can be matched just takes a lot of time. It’s worth it. I’ve charged as much as $1000 to match a color as it took me forever

If you don't think the paint correction would get you what you are looking for I'd get the parts you suggested, have them painted to match and store the originals. That way you are presenting a nice looking car and not impacting the originality. I wouldn't put any paint on the original bits.

I get the whole 2000 mile time capsule thing that some people find important, but to me, effed up paint is effed up paint, regardless of when it was applied, so I would strip and paint the hood if it were mine.

The paint color can be matched - just takes finding someone with the skills to do it. The idea of needing to blend the new paint into the front fenders is absurd.

The idea that all modern paints are crap compared to OEM German is rediculous - PPG makes urethane that is outstanding in terms of sun, chemicle, and chip resistance and there are likely many others that are of similar quality.

The way I see it, if someone thinks they should pay less for a car because the messed up paint on a panel was redone, then they do not deserve to buy that machine. This is paint, after all, not a coating of liquified unicorn horns sprayed on by mermaids!

Porsche must think it's a real thing, considering the nonsense prices on much of their parts (even for garbage parts bearing the brand, such as relays and CV boots).

Truth. I saw a guy from rennlist selling a 993 muffler clamp for $50. New in bag. It’s just an exhaust clamp. If it’s not a show car who cares?

M2, I have long been convinced that some people actually chub up at the prospect of paying ripoff prices for even the simplest of parts, because Porsche.

This goes straight to the 'it's only original once' BS. Of course, if you're 'an elitist', it's the only way to go.

I would vote to just re-clear the hood if the paint correction fails to produce good results. No basecoat color though. Sand with 1000 and apply some high quality clear like Standox, Glasurit or PPG that has that thick German type look.

A lot of cars get small touch ups or single panels fixed even before you buy a brand new car, so I don't think that would kill the OG value much.
