Actually, the person with lack of intelligence is the fool who can't understand that history always repeats. His post showed that he is a daft simpleton. Carry on.

Oh Shug... Fred is probably in the top 5 on this forum when it comes to Porsche knowledge and history. You just prove your own lack of knowledge when you post things like this. It was a smart burn and I would just laugh about it and move on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yet another interesting thread descends into crap, with no regard to the original poster..
Here is an attempt to get things back on course, having owned several of both models, the 911's always seem to be more characterful to me. Of course any Ferrari will always be special |

He should stick to turning wrenches, because he is laughably clueless about macro trends. But, he is welcome to make himself look like an idiot by with his insults of "lack of intelligence". My common sense thesis speaks for itself, and is held by many people in the industry, with several quotes cited. But, sure, your '32 Ford, '57 Chevy, '68 Camaro, and '79 911 will keep rising forever. Pass that crack pipe when you're done because history has already shown who is lacking basic intelligence.

I posted this thread because it was encouraging to me that young people seem to be drawn to the 911, even more profoundly than other collector cars I have owned. It gives me hope that our love for these Porsches will be shared by the others even after we are done.
With some luck, none of those kids will see how some of you torture each other, that would surely scare them off. Maybe you guys are just joking around and I’m late to the party, at least I hope so.. ![]()

When taking into account 2020 vs 1985 dollars, 57 Chevrolets and all desirable muscle cars are still fairly expensive year after year except for garbage examples. They have in fact gone up since he has started this tirade. Model T is a car with almost zero usability in 2020 so a pointless example.... and forget about vintage watches for pennies on the dollar as well. All this value obsession cannot be healthy for anyone.

All this to say that there will always be people interested in the gizmos of the past even with better more efficient alternatives. Will my kids be interested in my old artifacts? I don’t know and don’t care because I don’t expect them to like what I like. But SOME kid will.... Lastly, on this business of artifacts. Something to think about the next time you hear someone getting all misty-eyed about a Steve McQueen watch or a celebrity-owned car or whatever: almost without exception, there’s no magic in an object. Without Excalibur, King Arthur might not have been a king — but without Arthur, Excalibur was just another rusty piece of metal. Legend of Arthur aside I think there is something to be said for objects that were once owned by those we admire. Especially family. I only have two things my great-great Grandad owned. One is a double sided axe the other is a hickory “hammer,” these he used while traveling around the country making large nuts and bolts from trees to be used in cotton presses. He cut male and female threads by eye alone. Just junk to anyone else and not useful for much but I enjoy having them about because he touched them once...

Every cars and coffee I attend, in several states, has young guys ogling air cooled Porsches. Sure, they're ogling Ferraris and McLarens as well, but they're always chatting me up about my air cooled because they feel Porsches are within their reach (someday) and they can work on them themselves. These guys are no different than guys were in the 1950's, 60's, 70's and so on. There's a pool of car guys like this in every generation.
To attack Fred as clueless is laughable. Fred has more knowledge in his little finger than most of us here, but certainly more than his critic, who has next to zero credibility. Once you disagree with him, he goes nuclear. If he ever left his keyboard and went to a local C&C around here, he would see for himself. This anger is symptomatic of the digital times we live in, where everyone with a keyboard feels their opinion matters. It doesn't.

Build quality of todays cars are nothing like what they used to be. All riveted and slapped together. Had a Ferrari Pista at my friends shop, we removed the front bumper the grills and hardware were a joke. Considering the money these cost I expect more. All show and go and not meant to last from what I see.

I have had the pleasure of talking with Fred on the phone. Shug would never say anything like that about Fred if he had spoken with him. Really friendly and knowledgeable guy. I'm 100% sure his post was in jest and meant no real insult.

I find Porsche guys/girls very approachable and happy to share. It's a shame there is so much entitled hatred in the world. Really such a waste of energy.

Glad to hear the vitriolic comments are (mostly) in jest. I’ve owned Porsches since 1983 and have always found fellow Porsche owners to be great. They aren’t quite as eccentric as the British car crowd, but every bit as fun loving, and there is less dripped oil to clean up after a car show. Last edited by Fairview; 11-25-2020 at 09:42 AM.. |

Certainly can be more beef than pork(er) on some of these P-marketplace threads. Sometimes it’s good sport, oftentimes it looks to me to cross a line. Never like to see that, whatever the history, but get that the rules of engagement are a little different on the Melrose Place sub-forum. It’s a fine line, but the passion and differences of opinion should be welcomed (even if disagreeable from time to time).

I don't think the value/loss of interest in WWII generation cars is a good litmus test for air-cooled. Those cars are extremely antiquated and pretty much useable in modern traffic. Anything (esp pcars) made over the past few decades still have the safety features and modern refinement be enjoyed today. Huge difference in appeal.
As for 911 v. 308, the Ferrari has definitely appreciated in value but they aren't "hot" right now like the 911 market. In many cases 911 values have even surpassed the Ferrari. If you want a very nice G50 Coupe, you'll probably pay more for it than an equivalent 328. I'm lucky enough to own and love both, but will concede that the vintage Ferrari's tend to look better than they drive. Blast to drive one weekend a month for an hour, then you can't wait to get out of it. The 911 is an all around superb machine and prices now reflect that. Old ferraris are looked at. I’d love a testarossa - 80s kid - but the upkeep is a drag.
911s are German. Fix the crap they messed up from the factory and they go forever. I see more new ferraris than new porkers (ignoring boxsters) but more old porsches than old ferraris here. |

But, I have no problem dishing it right back to these internet bullies who are clueless. (See? Two can play that game) If he wants to believe that '57 Chevys and air-cooled 911's will always rise in demand, let him. Time, history, and aging demographics will reveal his own lack of intelligence.
