When I was 17 I was driving to Salt Lake in my mom's '85 Accord. She was asleep and going down one hill in Nevada I decided to ride the ride. 105mph.

At the bottom was a cop. He pulled us over. He made me get out of the car and get into his car. He gave me quite the lecture, told me how he could arrest me, etc. and then handed me a ticket for 78 in a 65. And for whatever reason he didn't tell my mom how fast I was really going. I'll never forget that.

In college years in Dallas, met some Japanese exchange Students at SMU who I later brought to my home in Nevada when they drove to San Francisco via rental car. Hiroki Matsumoto could speak very fluent English. En route they were pulled over by a State Trooper who said you're way over the speed limit! Hiroki said in reply -- Excusu me Sa! WHATO MEAN LIMITO?? The trooper told them basically to get the hell out of here! A year later I traveled to Japan and met them in Kobe. I now teach at the same university where they were students.

Kind of like buying a really nice C2 Vette with a small block, everyone will say "You could have had a big block" for that kind of money.

I have owned a Ghia and a number of 911s. I've never driven a 912, but I can definitely see the draw. No doubt these 912 owners are likely adding to an already significant collection that includes a 911, or just love flat-4s, or the lightness, or whatever. Regardless, the market is speaking and there are a lot of well-to-do buyers that love these cars.

I think as enthusiasts, we've moved past the "mine is faster therefore it's better" mentality by now, no? You can't throw a rock without hitting a 400+ horsepower daily driver anymore yet we're all driving antiquated tin cans with 80 - 220 hp.

Everyone goes ... nice, is that a 911 ?

Matt Monson 04-03-2021 03:47 PM

My first Porsche was a 70 911T, a targa. I have subsequently owned, and used as daily drivers, a 73 914 2.0, then an 87 924s, a 76 912e, a 68 911T, an 85 Carrera, a 67 912, and finally an 86 Carrera. I'm more closely allied with Captain Slow than Jeremy "Powa!" Clarkson. There are millions like me.

I'm slowly moving up the water cooled order. Had a '97 2.5 Boxster, and then an '07 987S. Currently daily an X51 996 with a neck snapping 345bhp, at sea level. It is the most powerful car I've owned.

We have a really nice painted dash 1965 912 listed on BAT with a ton of documentation, original window sticker, German docs along with service records going back to the date of purchase. Really looking forward to seeing where it lands.

So what?

When I owned my Elan, people asked if it was a Ferrari.

When I owned my Scout, I kept getting "nice Bronco."

People are dumb. Drive what you like.

Let's face it, all bets are off when it comes to '65s. Plus, this is a really nice specimen, so $$$. GLWA.

Those might look similar but aren’t near identical.

914, 914-6 , Accord, Accord V6, you get the idea.

I’ll bet. My number is $89k.

We sure hope so! About 3 hours left....

I’m withdrawing my bid. I’m with Adam. I think it’s a MY66 car with a 65 pro date. It’s a gorgeous car, but not worth the extra $20k I was including for it being a ‘65.

David Borden 04-07-2021 01:03 PM

Matt, I think Adams comment provided even more evidence that the car was a 65. Re-read his comment again. He stated paint codes starting with 64 were MY 1965 for how I am reading.

But didn’t the ad state it is 6604? Did I miss a photo of the plate showing the paint code? I looked for one.

The original window sticker shows 6406, so maybe a typo somewhere ?

Car brought $85k, so with buyers fee, right around $89k! If you decide you retract your retract, you nailed it :D

That's the kind of detail I was looking for after I read the discussion. It's sometimes hard to find on a phone when you're just "bench racing" an auction. :D

Well sold.

.... makes me wonder what my fully restored, Benton Performance engine rebuilt , numbers matching 68 912 in special ordered Crystal Blue would fetch :)

That was actually brother Matt Wright speaking on BAT. Since he acquired his painted dash years ago he has become very knowledgable on the early cars. His car is very original, one family owned, still has the toolkit, dated wheels, matching engine, even warranty cards in the glove, it's a cool car.
