1973 Porsche 911E Barn Find 22 yrs later - 26k Original Miles

Hey everyone,

So it seems like the people around me have caught the air-cooled bug..

Me and some family have a group chat where we share car content and deals we come across. The other day my cousin sent a car in the chat that almost looked too good to be true but I ended up getting in contact with the seller.

Long story short, the owner of old age passed away and his son-in-law was in charge of selling some of his things. He mentioned the car was parked in the 90's due to a fuel issue. The odometer read 26,xxx miles and all receipts show mileage in the teens. The interior of the car showed to be in very nice shape.

We got a chance to see the car the morning after the car was listed online. We were coming to get it for a decent deal but we ended up paying the sellers asking price since there was about 10 others in line behind us and several were offering full asking. I can't disclose what we paid for the vehicle since other parties were involved. It was a very fair price if everything checks out, but I wouldn't say it was 'cheap'.

We picked the car up and dropped it off at our buddies that detail vehicles here locally. They have a YouTube channel called WD Detailing. They were able to clean it up and really bring out the paint and imperfections as well.

We then took the car to a family garage where we were able to troubleshoot all day Saturday and actually got it to fire up and run! That video will be coming out in the next few weeks, definitely one to keep an eye out for.

The video below shows the car in the condition it was picked up in and how well it cleaned up after some detailing.

I'll post all progress on here, feel free to share any insight. Enjoy!

Congratulations!

Looks like you have a dream car there. Hope you didn’t have to sacrifice too much of the house deposit!

Congrats on the find and acquisition. Looks nice. Interesting choice of tail and drivers side mirror - maybe PO preferred look of later cars (forward date)? Enjoy!

Very cool find, are you planning to sell the 912 and keep this one or keep both!

A little here and a little there and this could be a moonshot on BaT for you Itza. Let's hope it's al there, checks out and the rust worm hasn't taken up residence.

Cool find Mar! Very exciting and reminds me of some past moments and finds running down cars -- quite exhilarating!! You seem to live in a target rich environment!

Sweet car! Cleaned up very nicely. Should be a fun project.

I'd go back and ask about that tractor haha. That thing is a beast

Thanks!! I actually only assisted with acquiring the car and will be helping with the entire restoration (as far as we see fit) but did not cough up my funds for this car. That being said, there is positives and negatives, the down side is I don’t get to add this car to my fleet and possibly make a nice profit later. The upside is I still have the house deposit, a happy wife, and a little less risk in my life currently (in case it needs a lot more than we thought) haha

Thank you! Definitely an interesting look. The good thing is, the car came with the original grille, which we already swapped back on (stay tuned for the second episode, it looks a lot better IMO!) but the decklid was drilled into.. oh well, we will get it done.

As I touched on above, I’m assisting with the resto for this car and it’s actually owned by a family member at this point.

The yellow 912 sold on BAT a few months ago: https://youtu.be/wt-PyfcdXDs

I still have my 77 911 wide body car + a car making its way from Cali any day now (hint, it’s another 912 but not the long hood kind lol)

That would be very ideal! So far it’s been very enjoyable working on this car. We’ve discovered a few things recently which everyone will find interesting. Let’s just say the rust worm might have rented for a short time..

Thanks Bernie!! I’d say about half the cars that have been in our possession have been nearby 1-2 hours. The rest have been west coast cars. Hopefully more come up near by

Thanks Pedro! There was a VW sterling kit car there as well. We didn’t know much about them and it didn’t seem like a very expensive car so we didn’t pursue it. it ended up at the same detailer that we use to clean ours up, pretty funny!

You’re right about the tractors, I might have to ask the seller about them lol

For anyone interested to see my buddies who took care of the cleaning and detailing process:

My favorite part is the foam soap spray, makes it look like it’s getting fresh paint ha

Never show the driver side?? Haha how bad is that missing area of paint? From body damage? Where did they find the rust hiding? What areas have it?

Haha the passenger side seems to be it's good side! It wouldn't be a good photo of the driver side the way it was sitting and the lighting during that orientation.

The missing paint is on that fender area and it's only as bad as you can see in the video. The passenger side lower fender area has a few rust bubbles. There is some rust underneath the car, not sure if its bad or the extent of it since it's covered.

The rest of the underbody look great and it's nice someone replaced the front pan.

Good stuff! Can't believe how clean that interior is. Decklid should be fairly "easy" fix. Replace those hood shocks haha.

On the braided fuel lines, unless you're going for a concours restoration, I'd find some high pressure fuel injection hose that is rated for ethanol. You may also want to look into replacing the tunnel fuel lines as those are likely toast too. When I redid my 914, I ended up replacing the three-port fuel pump with a modern inline Bosch part along with stainless fuel lines in the tunnel. Had to reroute the return line but it wasn't too hard.

Nice progress though. Will be nice when finished!

P.S. Noticed you are in Cleveland. We used to live in Oberlin when I was a kid (my dad was a professor at the college) and forgot how damn cold it is up there

Thanks and I agree, It shouldn't be too bad to get the decklid looking right! The shocks are a must

I'll forward that info since it might be the route we go. He actually picked up a fuel pump already but we might have to get creative with the lines. I'm assuming we are going to pull the engine soon to make replacing everything including the tunnel lines that much easier.

Small world!! The cold and snow has definitely caught up to us these last few weeks

Len Cummings for the fuel lines. You have to email him, not send him a PM here. He does the only replacement tunnel lines worth buying, at least in the States.

Sending you a PM for that e-mail if you have it.

Still waiting for those mirror photos

Yep. Len is the man. Super cool and great to deal with. He hooked me up on fuel lines for my '84 and was super helpful when I replaced the gas tank and needed an inline filter setup.

Very cool.

I sent him an email a few hours ago.

Hopefully we can get something going soon.

The motor has to come out anyway, should be fun
