Valuation help modified 1972 911T - considering selling

Hey guys. Looking for some advice. I have a 1972 911T Targa that I have owned car for 32 years that I am considering selling. Looking at a Cayman and have limited garage space. However it is a unique car in that it is obviously modified and has a rebuilt title. I never cared about the title because I never thought about selling. Whatever happened to the car was prior to my ownership so I have no idea what the problem was. She is straight, rust free and runs great.

In 2003 I converted her to a steel wide body and installed a 1986 3.2L engine and transmission with front oil cooler. Upgraded the suspension and later added some widened Fuchs. I have all the records and receipts including the modifications I’ve made through the years going back to 1992.

The car is in very good condition and had an extensive service recently by well regarded local shop. We have also brought her to several local car shows / PCA events. Pictures below. Not concours ready. These are local casual shows. And there are signs of wear, small scratches etc.

I am looking for advice on how I might go about selling the car including trying to establish its value. I’ve been a member of PCA for 27 years but hesitate to put a for sale sign on her at a show or meeting because I don’t where to start the negotiations.

Another off the wall question - if I just hold on to her for a couple of years, can I count on her going up in value?

Any thoughts, opinions, question are welcome.

Thanks,
Matt

Made the local PCA magazine

Earlier this summer local show

I can say from experience, the market for modded Targas is not good. Nowhere like the love for modded coupes.

No accounting for taste. :-)

Perhaps I am alone in loving a Targa RSR tribute...

I suppose, worse case, I could keep her for another 30 years... :-)

Thanks for the reply.

Personally I am not a Targa fan, but a long hood hot rod with a 3.2 should check some boxes for a few people. I bet that car is a hoot to drive.

A normal matching numbers '72 911 T is what these days? $100k? $150k? I sold a 72T coupe in need of restoration last year for $65K. Just saying.

I think you're in the six figure range. Try to find a long hood in good shape, anywhere, for less. GLWS.

Nick is spot on.

I am partial to the 72 Model Year but for the reasons that have been deleted from this build.

In my opinion the value is hurt with a Salvage Title and the delete of the 72 Oil system.

Many early models have later motors and have wide body conversions and this is a plus.

I owned a 72 Coupe for many years, and made the mistake of "upgrading" to a YellowBird configuration.

In hind-sight it would have been better to keep it original.

Need a kidney? I’ve got a healthy one I’d trade for that car.

I saw that one coming. M2 has a soft spot for a 72 targa. Tading kidneys is fine, especially if you can get one on the black market.

Bill and Nick have way more experience than I do but I think is a $75k car at best.

Salvage title, missing oil door, incorrect non MFI engine, and flares. This would be a wonderful driver but six figures is a stretch to me.

To the OP - I hope you get it though!

BoxsterGT, Tonger,

Agreed. I have to say to say I am most worried about the salvage title. And I should have insisted that the 1972-only oil door be integrated into the flares. That would have been very cool. I remember topping off the oil at a gas station (prior to the conversion) years ago pouring oil into what some gentleman clearly thought was a gas tank. He walked over and asked politely if I knew what I was doing. 😊

Thanks for the comments,
Matt

The last couple cars I’ve bought and sold had salvage/branded titles. The older they get the less that means. Condition of the car today matters most. Buyers who are still scared by it will stay away, but there are a bunch of us who just don’t care. I had no trouble selling either of my cars when the time came.

Don't worry about the salvage title. It's 50 years old and anyone looking for a long hood hot rod won't care.

They are a known entity. A genuinely interested buyer will reach out, and get the whole story and pictures. It’s a unique approach but eliminates time wasters, askholes, and tire kickers.

What’s most relevant to you is the price. It gives you a real comp.

Holy smokes that thing was a beast! I can only imagine what one would be like all fixed up like that.

If I was interested, I'd have it gone over by my P-mechanic with a fine toothed comb. If it's as good as it could be, it seems like a deal to me at $85K.

Great point. I should have realized that. Good looking car.
