What is a rough 912 going for?

Asking for my neighbor. He bought a '68 or '69 912 coupe from a mutual friend about 20 years ago, and he is thinking he has taken it as far as he's willing to go with it, and it's time to move on to another project. It runs and drives, unless it's raining. It's by no means a perfect car. It has a rollbar, aftermarket seats, and a home paint job. Fiberglass ducktail, although I think the original engine cover is hanging in his garage. The previous owner did some rust repair / replacement on the front, not the best job. He built a cross brace for the front end and says he can lift the car by either torsion mount and still open and close both front doors. As far as I know it still has a 912 engine and not a VW, but I'm not an air cooled expert. I just don't want him to get ripped off when he finally does decide to sell it.

When he bought it, I sold him a set of 15x7 Fuchs for $400. Should I ask for them back, or a portion of the sale?

I don't think you're going to get any input until you post more info and especially pictures.

What sort of photos or info are you looking for?
Again, neighbor's car, not mine, so I'll have to check with him before posting any photos of the car. He autocrosses it, ran a hill climb on Saturday, there's definitely nothing wrong mechanically with it. Like I stated, he painted it in his garage a couple years ago, there's no rust bubbling up under the paint job.

Well for one, any pictures will do, but the more the merrier. Leave out the license plate if that makes him feel more comfortable.

Statements like "it runs and drives, unless it's raining..." and "rust/repair replacement, not the best job..." are nebulous at best and scary at worst. Pictures tell stories.

Show all four sides. Show the interior. Show the engine. Show the rust repair. This way we can at least see what your talking about. Otherwise, we're just guessing, from $10K to $30K.

I guess he's changed his mind.

Quote:
It worked so well yesterday, I'm not serious about selling it. It takes up less room than a Cayman, or 944, much cheaper to fix, cheap sized tires, it's only shortfall is its low power. It's powerful enough for driving around on the street, less so for Auto-X, but I probably thought that about every car I've ever owned.
I went with him on Saturday to a hillclimb, and it rained in the morning, rained hard during his first run. I don't know if it's the aftermarket ducktail, or something in the way he has the ignition set up, but if it's raining it sputters and dies. He also made the run with the windows down, and was thoroughly soaked when he came back. That probably stirred up the "sell it" thoughts again. I know he contacted Manos once before, and I'm sure he can do better than a offer from him.
