Time to sell my car..........
All,
I'm finally ready to retire. Between my dad and I we've owned the car for 42 of it's 47 years. 1977 911S Targa. 249,000 original miles. I drive the car every weekend but am at the point I need to get to someone that will continue the journey for me. Pro's.....body and interior are in outstanding shape. ![]() ![]() Con's......it's a 2.7S with a magnesium case and leaks oil. Just wondering the best course of action to sell the car. BAT or is there something better? Open to ideas..... Sean

Ice Green Metallic is a beautiful color, post some more pics when you can. As long as you can agree on a reserve, Bring a Trailer may be your best option. It attracts the widest audience, seller participation in the auction comments is critical. Given your very long ownership, I'm sure you'd have a lot to offer. Good luck!

...just prepare yourself for the inevitable snark about the car's ride height ("Was it entered in the Dakar rally?").

Hey Mocker......no worries as this car is all ORIGINAL and ready for someone to "play with it".
I guess you have a problem is how it's set up? Sorry, just a guy that loves driving my car. If you have a problem with it.....just don't post. This forum has gone off the rails and part of why I'm out of here and done with this group.

WTF? I wasn't criticizing your car, I was trying to give you an idea of what to expect from the BAT peanut gallery.

I was only looking for input on the best way to sell the car. Certainly wasn't looking for criticism on the car. WTF?

I was just pointing out the OP said he 'was done' with PP. That begged the question of coming here in the first place. Gotta go mow part of the lawn. 100 degrees but at least there's shade.

The internet isn't reliable for much, but it's very good at quickly heating up and melting snowflakes.

The ride height comment was a fairly mild observation, preparing you for the inevitable criticism from BaT know it alls. We can all see it's a stock setup and you've kept it that way on purpose. This is the same BaT crowd that would criticize a Cab for being slower than a coupe on the track. Just stupid.
I think BaT is a good sellers website most of the time. Be prepared with very thick skin to field all negative comments and criticisms by taking the high road. As soon as you stoop to their level, you're toast. Nice car BTW. The 42 year ownership history could go a long way. GLWS

BaT will eat this guy for lunch. If the clearly stated "be prepared" heads up can be so easily misconstrued as a personal attack here, then there is no chance of getting the best offer out of that venue from this seller.
You want the best price?; have the listing consigned, then you won't kill your own sale. If you want someone to look after the car...that may also require a different approach. |

My 2 cents on selling this car on BaT:
Long term ownership is a huge plus on BaT. Color is great, also good for BaT. That one picture of the interior seems like it's in decent shape for a 250k mile car. Assuming no cracks on the dash, etc. that is also a plus Stock ride height would be mocked by some but would be lapped up by others who highly value originality. So I'd call it a wash. 42 year ownership would be an enormous plus if there is a one inch thick stack of records to go with it. If not, still a plus but expect to be drilled and challenged endlessly. That's part of the BaT game, in fact that's the whole value of BaT for a buyer. Magnesium case totally 100% not a factor. Nobody snubs 2.7s anymore. It's abundantly clear that if the engine's temperature is kept normal it's a good reliable engine. To that point on temperature, expect an aggressive line of questioning on thermal reactors and when did you take them off and 5 blade fan and when did you replace it with 11 blade (assuming you did both things). Mileage is clearly not a plus but not a huge deal breaker if there's confidence on the status of the engine. If at any point in time the case was split and any work had been done, that would be a massive plus obviously. Leaks oil is not good. It sullies what is otherwise a very attractive car for anyone in the market for a middie targa. I would look into what it takes to have a reputable Porsche shop do it (not yourself, even if you normally work on the car). If it's, like, a $5k job I think it would more than pay back for itself. If it was my car I might pay even a bit more potentially. It could make the difference between the car being perceived as a semi-project and a unicorn survivor.

Seller is definitely not ready for the “expert” sharks on BAT if one ride height comment made him lose his $hit.

I just sold mine a month ago here for full asking price, just put a reasonable price on it and list it here. It will sell, its a great color with a long ownership history. Get some better photos for your ad though than what you posted. Nice clear photos in a good undistracting setting and not on grass, take a couple shots during golden hour.
Bring a trailer is a cesspool and 95 percent of the posters on there are either bots or have never owned a classic car of any sort. |

I agree, probably on the high end of the unrestored 912E market but it had all the hard to find stuff and was a good driver... plus I didn't mess with it just kept it stock. There will always be a market for unmolested, low mileage, complete cars in my opinion.
Theres a lot of serious buyers that browse this forum I'd say give it a shot. |

I sold my rusted car 2 weeks back on BAT.
Comments were expected... mine was not original at all. 70T 2.2L bigger bores with MFI. Thats the only good thing in the car. Leak down tests were all good. You need not reply all comments, a serious bidder would just bid w/o asking any questions. Does not hurt, its only $99 fee. Make sure to take A LOT of images and videos.
