Question Which 911 to go after.

Which one to go after?

I am looking for a daily driver that I will not baby at all. Car cover only during extended rain storms and garage for winters. This will be my first Porsche. Any suggestions or comments.

1975 911 Carrera Coupe-1984 3.2 engine 45K on rebuild, short shift, center force, momo, two sets of Fuchs, Tail, interior very good, drives excellent, Some service records, rust bubbles door pillars, rockers both sides, leak on upper right windshield area, one finger hole in floor pan. The car has been a daily driver and garaged winters Price 8.5K

85 911 Targa 150K Owner paid 11.5K for car, has had for 3 years and only driven on weekends. Replaced wheel with MOMO and changed oil regular basis. Owner says that after a week of sitting there is a large oil puddle. The car is garaged and not currently registered. Excellent looking body and interior. Three owners No service records and unknown history. Price 11.5K

87 911 Targa 90K Car dealers personal vehicle for last seven years. Looks to be in excellent shape with very little (6K) use. Targa leaks a little. Price 15K

The '87 has a stonger gearbox. Other than that, 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of another...

Hmmm

Kinda one of those "daddy, where do babys come from" questions...just watch ebay and local papers...wait till you find one you can't stop thinkin about...then wait a few more days..thats what I do...works great for me. Since you want it as a daily driver, I assume (except for winter)...make sure you drive it and have a Porsche shop check it out before you buy. Ebay is a good place just to get a idea of one that really appeals to you. You will find you will start looking for a more and more specific car. Another thing to concider is do you want a more modern one? Does years matter? What kind of options do you want daily? AC? Consider those and it will somewhat limit your options. Jess

Thanks for the comments and replies.

The main question in my mind is whether a Targa is suited as a non garaged, uncovered daily driver for eight months out of the year. Anybody use theirs this way?

Go with a coupe. Preferably non sunroof, if you can find one. I'm not saying ALL sunroof coupes and Targas leak, but many do...and considering your climate??? Whatever car you get serious about, do pay for a PPI...a pre purchase inspection, performed by an independent mechanic of your choice.

Find a '87-'89 Carrera w/G50 and never look back. Coupe preferred. Sunroof optional but you'll have a hell of a time finding one without.

Good luck,

Tom

imo the mid 70s is much simpler, lighter and cheaper to keep up...but your in mass ?? salt ,rust and yuk ! in the winter......I would buy a old honda for the winter ride ( water heat )
