A question of Value . . .
We have for sale our own 1983 911 SC, built professionally to PCA National Class G racing specs, and highly developed and sorted.

No expense was spared. Freshly rebuilt 3.0 liter. Freshly rebuilt 915. Adjustable everything suspension (except coil-overs). Full cage with intrusion protection, fire supression, six-point restraints. Even fresh paint, with racing decals removed.
We started with a low-mileage "garage queen" which had been unmolested. We are offering the car with virtually ALL the stock interior, trim, and equipment which was removed in preparation for the track. Additionally, we have over $ 6000 (used pricing) in track-specific spares (extra Bilstein competition struts & shocks, softer torsion bars, 2 sets BBS wheels, NEW Hoosier tires, rain wheels and tires, factory turbo tail and lid, many others) which are packaged with the car. We have reduced the price on all the above to $ 28,500 OBO. Now, finally to my question: IN YOUR OPINION, will we have a quicker / easier sale by separating the racer from the stock parts, and from the racing spares, and selling as three distinct "items"? All considered opinions or suggestions or comments will be appreciated. Ed LoPresti |

Yes. What you have done here is created a fine race / track car, but by doing that, you've removed the pool of street buyers. Race cars are always a tough sell because the potential market is much smaller...

Wayne,
Thanks for the observation about limited market. Is it your belief that, within that narrow field of buyers, most will want the racing-specific spares? Really what I am asking is, Are we better off reducing the price on the "racing package" by selling off the spares separately from the car? Most formula car and sports racer buyers consider appropriate spares a HUGE BENEFIT! Perhaps not so with Porsche racers?? Thanks again, Ed |

Hi Ed
I race an F Stock Euro SC in PCA. Two issues come to my mind. First, with a car priced near the top of the stock G and F class prices I think most buyers will want to see the car's results and expect them to bear near the top in several races. I realize that this is often more a reflection of the driver than the car but most of your buyers already think (wrong or right) that they are great drivers. It might be worth it to drive the car in a few races and prove that it's a winner. Second, many people still believe that they can transform thier 12K SC into a car like yours for a couple of grand and miss the value that you are offering here. As someone who's built a very similar car and watched several others undertake the task as well, I can tell you (*and your potential buyers) that you probably can't build this car for the price. At least not well, anyway. Finally, to your question about spares. I would appreciate them with the deal because I realize that most of what you are offering is necessary to go racing. A new racer might prefer to get the car for less money and again not see the value in the package. Overall though, an interested buyer will work out the details of what's included and what's not. Best of luck selling what appears to be a great car (once you remove the splitter to make it legal.) Jess Wurmbrand |

Thank you gentlemen!
Jess, Thanks for your very considered opinion, and for elaborating. We are beginning to see the wisdom in ALL your points! Our purchaser will probably be new to racing, and therefore not appreciate the full value of the spares package. Also, there are those who still believe they can build one of these for under $ 45K - if they can, we would like to hire them! Incidentally, without extensive development, this car runs consistantly within 2 seconds of the G-Stock track records at The Glen and Pocono. (And in some cases F-Stock as well.) Not bad for a beginner! The hi-down splitter is SCCA trim. -------------------------- boba, We also appreciate concise communication, and it looks like you, and Jess, and Wayne are in agreement. Who are we to argue? The stuff goes up for sale, and the price of the car comes down. -Ed |

Wayne, Jess, and boba,
Thanks again for your very astute opinions on my question. The racing spares are selling rapidly (we probably have them priced way too low!) Next will be to see if the commensurate reduction in asking price of the racer receives an equally enthusiastic welcome! Ed |
