1968 912 coupe...what would be a reasonable offer for this one?
This is a car local to me that I am thinking about checking out:
In the words of the seller: "I bought the car in '92 from the original owner, a retired MIT prof who used it to commute from the cape. I never drove it. It has 71,000 miles on it. A friend of mine; a porsche owner/mechanic/welder guy did the work on it. The rear main seal leaked and we replaced that (and the clutch disc while we were at it). The rust was not real bad but what you might expect on a pre-galvinized era car. Headlight buckets, etc. The pans under the car were quite good. All the body work has been done except for the paint but some parts have to be put back on. Right front fender, gas tank. and some stuff inside. I had the carbs (solex) shop rebuilt as well as the brakes. Much of the underside; wheel wells, etc I painted with epoxy paint. The engine is in the car. It's on blocks but the wheels are ready to go on. We did a lot of stuff I can't remember right now. No work has been done on it in 7 or 8 years. I'll try to take some pictures but it is in my garage/shop covered in dust and surrounded by non-car stuff." So...what say you? I'm looking for a project and a solid 912 seems to be the 'easy' way into a SWB car. What does an acceptable 'driver' quality paint job cost? As far as the engine...

I would say $5000 would be a good average point to work with. You made no mention of the interior however. A paint job worth having will be between 3000-5000, don't get any of those cheap paint jobs, they lead to multiple paint jobs. So for about $10,000 total you could have a SWB car that would be worth every penny you spent on it if you needed to sell her.

I would start at $2-3K. Will they sell for that? Maybe not.
There was a running, driving swb 912 in the classifieds for $5500 a few months ago, I'm not sure it ever sold. There are also 2 for sale on thesamba.com right now for $6500. They also appear to be running, driving cars. Get one of those for $6K, maybe $1K or more to ship it and you are still way ahead of this one. I'd definitely check it out though.

Update-
I'm going to see it sunday. If it checks out and is mostly complete, I am going to make an offer more in line with what Todd suggested. Vroom!
