What is a 77s Targa with a 3.2 worth?
Looking at getting into my first 911, my family has had them for years though.
Found a nice looking 77s that has a 3.2 engine in it, what do you think its worth, and what should I look out for? Mileage is about 120K, unknown on the engine, but they have all the books and records of the conversion. What questions should I ask the seller? Thanks for any help! |

The 3.2 is an upgrade but should be cost neutral, since it is not original and has no documented mileage. What I am saying is that this should be the same value than a regular 77,
What is the color of the interior and the paint? Any body work (i.e. wider flares?). The mid year cars still don't fetch a whole bunch of money, so make sure you don't overpay. My main issue with them is that you can't fit much rubber under those rear fenders. I would not pay more than 12k for such a car, assuming it needs nothing and is presentable. George |

Car is white with black interior. I kinda like the skinny fenders, makes it look classic. Right now its priced at $12K.

White and black is good. Lots of brown and gold and otehr not so nice colors out there in that era ... I'd entertain it at that price. Negotiate hard. It being a Targa detracts, as coupes are more sought after in the US. Of course you have to go whine about the "non original undocumented engine". Even though it's golden compared to the 2.7 that was in there.
Other things determining value is the shape it's in. Is the interior like new? Does the traga top leak or make noise? New seats, new targa top and a new dash will set you back 3k in a heartbeat - you doing the work! The next thing that is expensive is paint. At 12k it should be a very good driver quality no dullness or larger issues than small rock chips. Paint work is extremely pricey - 5k and up for a decent complete job. Suspension? Refreshing that can be $, even if you do it yourself. 1k is gone quickly for a set of new shocks, tierods, balljoints, bushings and maybe a set of upgraded torsion bars ... I agree that the narrow fenders in the rear look classy, but again, you can't fit a decent size wheel and tire unerneath there. I haven't seen much out there under 10k that's even half way decent locally. I may be mistaken, but the days of $8k beater SCs and mid year cars seem to be over here in the Bay Area. If you are not in CA, 12k is a good starting point. George |
