Thoughts on 96 993 Needing topend work

Looking at a 1996 996 coupe. I've had it inspected already and trying to decide if its worth getting. It needs front brakes and has a rough idle. Dealer said could need a top end rebuild(didn't do a leakdown test) and worst case scenario it'll be $6,000 for everything. Here's the good: Paint and body are good. Not mint, but above average for a driver. Interior is excellent. And finally the price...$17,500!

Look forward to your thoughts/comments. Thanks!

What's the mileage on the car?

How does the dealership determine that it "could" need a top end rebuild? And what exactly did they mean with "top end"?

Sounds to me like you will have to have a real PPI done. Unless something is lost in translation here, there is not enough info from teh PPI to make a decision.

Good Luck,

George

$6,000 is what the large independent shop here in Charlotte charges to replace valve guides and clean out SAI passages. So IMHO at $17,500 plus the $6k you have a very good to smoking deal.

It could be a market price too, if the car has 180k miles. We don't even know how many miles are on the car yet, so how can we say "it's a deal'?

George, I am taking him at his word, plus my own preferences. When I was looking if I had found a car that meets his description and checked out as such with a PPI, I would have been all over it.
