I got a PPI recently on a turbo w/ @ 80k miles on it. The leak down test came back
Cylinder # 1 = 20% 2 = 14% 3 = 24% 4 = 4% 5 = 3% 6 = 4% The guy that did the PPI believes one of two things is going on: 1) that the side of the engine the high cylinders are located on may not have been tuned properly, or maybe not at all, under the last service; or 2) the car needs a new top end rebuild. He is going to pull the cover off and tune the valves on that side and do another leak test. My question is really whether the engine is ok, if the results come back comprable to cylinder 4-6, or is this problematic all the way around? The car checked out good otherwise. Thanks. I think you know those are leak-down numbers, not compression. If you get the high bank to match the low bank, that would be good in my book. Otherwise it could be valve guides or other headwork in the near future.
10% leakdown would be high, but acceptable IMHO. To help pinpoint the leakage, can your mechanic hear air leaking into the intake(valves) or exhaust (valves) or case (rings) during the test? Headgaskets on turbo cars are suspect also. |

Thanks for the reply! I'm not sure what the mechanic can hear. He is suppose to get the car back in and pull the cover off to retune the valves, etc...
