1971 911t 2.2

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to the group and have been looking for a 69-73 911 for about 8 months now, recently becoming more and more serious. I have come across a 1971 911t 70k miles #'s matching for around 10.5k. The seller is semi-knowledgeable on the car and has had it in storage for the past 5 years, owning it for a total of 15. There is no documentation on the car. The car is located 9 hours away driving and I just don't have the time to go see it. The seller was pretty insistent that I come see and drive the car, but was unwilling to drive it to a prepurchase inspection, although he said I could gladly take it to one if I came. Any suggestions to grab this puppy without getting burned? Others who have faced this problem, how did you resolve? For anyone interested, its the 911t on Toronto Craigslist, its been there for about a month now. Here's the link;

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Ppi.

There are no short cuts to buying these cars.Always get a PPI.He advertised all original parts,yet the horn grills aren`t,spoiler doesn`t look right for a 70 and the wipers are on the wrong side and the front bumperettes are missing. What else lurks unseen? Take your time and know what you are getting !!!! Repeat after me,"Always get a PPI" Best of luck, Tom

What's up with that steering wheel? Get a PPI on that car or go see it yourself. If the owner refuses the PPI, make the time to go up yourself or tell him thanks but no thanks.

Telltale sign is the car has been advertised for a month. 10.5K could be a great price if the car is what you think it is. In the current market, if that car was exactly as described (never mind the definition of "good mechanical condition", etc.) it would be long gone--unless the guy is so remote that no one has come to look. Certainly a flipper would have bought it.

Definitely, a PPI. No one has even mentioned RUST yet. You need to have complete confidence in the person doing the PPI, talking over beforehand what will be looked at. Nothing takes the place of a personal look, however, and looking where you want to look, and having an expert check the mechanicals. No history is a strong warning, not of fraud but of being skeptical of all claims and taking nothing for granted. If you don't want to make the effort to personally see and inspect and get a pro to go over the car, then it's a crap shoot.

Let us know your decision

If it is truly not rusty, then 10 gs is not awful. Even if the motor is tired, people give away 2.2T motors (relatively speaking) and you can just store the #s matching one. But 9 hrs is a long ways away. Where are you located? I'd be more curious about that pretty blue '69T on fleabay right now with no reserve (located in NJ)

I'm actually located in Providence, I see you are located in Wakefield. There is also a '72 white T located at Autosport engineering up on 495 that I am thinking about taking a look at. I saw the NJ T but was scared away by the ad. Do you know about any other spots for these cars in the area?

I say go check out the one at autosport engineering. 72's are sweet. Does it still have MFI? PM me. I lived in providence for several years and am frequently up that way.

Hey Guys, thanks for the help, I passed on the t up in Toronto however strangely have another one in sight that is in the states. Its a '70 911t with a recent engine rebuild, it seems pretty clean however except for some rust along the rocker. I know that these areas are a lot of work to repair and I was wondering if a PPI could tell me the extent of the damage without cutting away the outer rocker. Are there any other things I can ask the PP inspector to do to gage the amount of rust on the car? I can send some pics that I have of underneath and the rockers if anyone is interested. Thanks!

Sorry I didn't find this earlier - I'm local and would've happily gone for a closer look in person, take lots of pics, etc. so long as he's not too far. (Greater Toronto area can be huge, depending on your definition!) If you change your mind, let me know.
