m491 with turbo emblem?
Why do M491 packages have turbo emblems on the rear deck. Is this something the factory did?

Sometimes M491s fall into the hands of owners who like to play pretend.

From '84 to '86 the M491 Turbo Looks came with no emblem on the rear deck lid. The spoilers delete cars also came with no rear deck lid emblems.
From '87 to '89 they came with a Carrera emblem from the factory. There was a no cost delete option to have the factory not install it. '87 to '89 G50 Carreras had mild styling changes like the different rear reflector and H5 headlights. That's also when they started adding the Carrera badge at the factory. Sadly, as the other replies say, many Turbo Looks were victims of posers who added the Turbo badges later. At one time there was even a turbo exhaust tip that you could weld on to a 3.2 muffler to make it look like a turbo exhaust.

Ironically, the M491 is more rare than the Turbo, and prices for the M491 aren't that far off from Turbo prices these days! A very good condition M can go into the 30s these days. They have an interesting history, were low production and a lot of people like the looks (and the factory turbo chassis, brakes and suspension), but don't want or need the hassles and added complexity and expense of the turbo.
