Question 911SC prices...

Has anyone else noticed an increase in asking prices for the 78 thru 83 models? Or am I being optimistic here. I'm hoping the market will trend the way of the 356C & SC. I'm also thinking with the price of fuel now, the not so bad mpg of these cars won't hurt values either.

They may get a slight bump from the recent Excellence article, but I haven't really noticed an increase in prices and with the current economy don't think there will be for a while. I have noticed that its gotten more difficult to find nice original/unmolested SCs. I wouldn't part with mine unless someone offered in the 20's.

I noticed the the latest issue of Panaroma the prices of 82-83 SC's are going for $18-25,000 for orignal unmolested low mileage garage queens.

ive noticed. since i bought mine, spring 07, ive been watching closely out of curiosity and to see if i over paid. the prices i see on lousy examples compared to mine, are a bit higher than what i paid and what i was used to seeing.

I've noticed that both SC and 911 prices have been climbing over the last few years when looking at similar examples.

I've also noticed that those same cars are staying for sale a lot longer as well. I'm in the market for one myself and have been very keen on understanding where prices are going.

I cant imagine why good examples wont climb much higher. after having my SC for a while, I am really stunned that such and amazing sports car was so cheap to purchase. i think the only thing holding back the price is the # of nice cars available. I think its this supply/demand that is the primary reason why say, comparable Ferrari models such as the 308 and GT4 are priced so much higher....there are so few of them in excellent condition that have not been repainted/restored. in many ways, despite my love for italian cars, the 911 is a much better overall car, is cheaper to buy parts for, performs as well if not better and has every bit as much aesthetic appeal. I do think that the 1978 - 1989 911 models will be up in the 30K range some day. not that it matters cause im not selling mine

The economy stinks so they're not going up anytime soon. There were far far fewer Ferrari's made. These cars are NOT good investments and they wont be. Just drive it and enjoy it.

no car is a good investment, unless you bought a Muira or a 12 cylinder Ferrari or Dino in the 1970's. even though my car may be worth in the mid-20's someday, i will have put far mor into it keeping it healthy, which is why i drive it every chance i can. frankly, the only reason i care that the prices may go up, is because it may get harder to afford a nice, original example, should i need to replace mine if it gets crashed

Usually this time of year there are 10 to 15 SC';s listed on cars.com within 250 of my area.

Today I looked and there are 6 examples .

83 Coupe, rebuilt motor, $18,500-been listed for about a year nearby

78 Targa 98,690 Miles $20,000 (ugly Teal Slantnose conversion)

78 Targa Unknown miles wide-body conversion with 3.2, $24,000 invested for $14,000

80 Targa 135,000 Miles $14,000

80 Coupe 85,695 Miles $13,000

79 Coupe 122,000 Miles $12,500

Might be cheaper to just buy another 911 SC for the parts and sell the excess if my tranny/engine ever needs a rebuild.

The problem is those are offers to sell and not selling prices

Agreed. Once a car drops in price enough that a large number can afford them, the attrition rate of nice original cars goes up. As another example, try and find a nice original E36 M3 that hasn't been "tuned". It can be done, but is getting harder.

wow that is nice.
note however - and this is what I have noticed...that one has 135K miles and is a 1980.
Thats what i paid for mine and mine is an 83 and had 94K miles. Cars that are like mine, i now see with asking prices of $16K to $20K. dont know if they sell..but thats what i see

SCs probably are the best 'bang for buck' buy in the Porsche world. It's the greater rarity and more 'raw' driving experience that keeps the longhoods bringing more bucks, IMO.

I tell friends looking for their first Porsche to focus on the SC.

Although loads were produced, really nice, low mile coupes in good colors are hard to find.

I wonder if anyone ever considered trading an SC for a longhood?:

Are the prices in Excellence based in reality in any way, or is it just a group of owners in a mass-masturbation exercise?

I just bought a "so-so" to "good" '84 in January for ~$15, now they say $18.5-21? Not that I'd sell for anything less than an obscene amount, my ties to the car with the time and trouble I've put into it are stronger than the pull of a little money.

The prices in Excellence are a guess at the market based on a pretty limited sample set. Also there is a degree of the buyers on Excellence wanting to show what a great buy they made and the sellers wanting to show how high a price they got. Just my 2 cents

Yes, I know the pricing is self gratifying. I was referring to the "10 Porsches you should buy now" article. I have over 20 in my '83 SC and while it might not be worth that, I wouldn't consider less for the same reasons as you.
