1975s sporto targa
im looking at buying a another 911 its a nice clean two owner car. its the same color yellow as our carrera. my question is do i convert it from the sporto or leave it alone? i havent driven a sporto and the guy wants 9 to 10 k for it its as nice as this car just a standard narrow body 911S.
Its really a nice car with what looks like origanal paint and interior. the motor seems good but if not i have a nice 2.7 re-studed waiting to go into somthing is the price fair? its as nice as this car here ed ![]()

I think it's a fair price if everything checks out ok.
My brother used to have a 70 911S with a Sporto 20 years ago and he still lost his license for a few months.

If that is indeed the car grab it. Sporto & carrera package for 9k; rare combination.

ok checked out the car found it to be a very clean car with little to no rust. paint looks origanal or a very good repaint with glass out etc. but all decals vin sticker etc. have no tape line on them. but the motor has pulling head studs? when you first crank it over you here what sounds like air leaking out. after it starts it quiets up as the engine expands. then while its warm it no longer makes this noise the next time you crank.
so it is pulling head studs but we still like the car. what im after is a site or link that tells the production numbers of the 75 911S SPORTOMATIC. anyhelp would be great thanks guys for you input so far ed

I have no interest at all in a sporto.. so I would ask the same of you? Have you always wanted a sporto? Is this an "investment" car? How much is it to fix the stud issues.. $2k at minimum? Did the original price reflect (potential) engine issues? Where was the "little to no rust" part? How are other components like gaskets, seals, bushings (ie the rubber stuff?) How did the brakes feel? etc.

never really thought about a sporto until we saw this one. the real purpose for buying this car is because here in alaska the winters are long and the girl and i enjoy working on porsches.
as far as investment no not the reason just a solid car that i think maybe worth cleaning up and doing the repairs on. all the rubber is in good shape and the paint as well the rust or chips with rust is a little on the deck lid around the wiper arm and surface around the battery. removed battery and car is solid and no suspension rust. we have a low millage 75 carrera and a low mile 79 930 turbo that we are enjoying and want another car to play with. we figure that after all work is done we will put another 2800.00 into it. i will do the head studs myself with the help of a friends machine shop. this is just a really clean car and the wierdness of the sporto has us intrigued. ed

I bought the sporto targa tonite and while finalizing the deal the owner of the car threw in two more porsches. a 1976 rust free roller with no motor and a good 915 tranny that he was going to put into the sporto. and a very rust 1976 912E that somone put sc flares and deck lid on. the owner calls it the 912ESC WANTABE.
So looks like ill need to part out a few cars. ill let ya know what i have when i get them here and sort through the parts. ed

Congratulations on your purchase.
Don't be lulled by the noise going away on the cylinder head leaks -- assuming that's what it is. Do a compression check. If the compression loss is significant, the heads will be 'chattering' against the cylinders and eventually can erode both surfaces. As I'm sure you know, the only cure for pulling head studs is total disassembly and putting case savers in the case. I got a Sporto a couple years back, intending to swap transmissions, but I found driving the Sporto was kind of a kick. Give it a chance. Most have been replaced with manual transmissions, reducing the selection for people focused on getting a Sporto -- and there are a few.

yes im very aware of the head stud issues. and i will not be driving it due to this fact, and we have made the choice to leave the sporto in it as this car is very original. we are going to to do the cosmetic clean up while we tear the engine down to inspect the head studs.
ill post a few pics soon. ed

Nice !
Looks like the yellow 74 Targa I almost picked up a few years ago but turned it down since I found some rust/bondo issues during my third inspection of the car. I like the yellow with the stainless Targa bar and chrome window trim.

moved the turbo over in the garage and slid it in for the first cleaning. man what a classy little car looks good in the narrow body. going to restore the wheels and clean the underside i looked under it last night really good and its still in nice yellow paint in the wheel wells and on the pan bottom. went around it very carefully with low power magnet and itis solid no signs of repairs.
so what do you guys think this is worth ill get more pics. of it detailed up, how about the options has some strange ones to me? 1 rear window wiper 2 headlight washers 3 no h1s 4 alloy front S brakes standard rear? 5 S option without 3 spoke wheel i checked and the S was a option in 75 they had the standard 911 and the 911S/carrera where about the same with the exception of flares wheels and spoilers as far as i can tell. thanks ed

Market for these cars while rare does not seem very strong. Three cars were on EBay recently and despite BIN of $27,000 for a sporto carrera and $16,000 for a sporto S and a red targa none of the cars, to the best of my knowledge, received bids over $7000. I must say yours looks much nicer than the others and sounds like it has some interesting options. I will try to find the threads later tonight and attach for you.
