Do 964's really price lower, or is it just in my head

Hi,

I am looking at buying a 3.2 G50 or a 1995 993 in red/black/white. There is a good deal locally on a 964 with rebuild engine, but I just can't get myself to go see it. I don't like how the bumpers look real heavy on a 964. I like the classic "impact bumper" look on the SC's and 3.2's .. or.. the 993, which I like equally well or more. It seems like good 3.2's are mid to high teens, and 993's are mid to high 20's (the 1995s) but then I see and hear about 964's going for like low to mid teens all the time. I really should go see one and drive it because I bet it has the road feel of the G50 cars but power close the 1995... but part of it is that if I don't like its look/shape, and others don't, then I'll have the same problem trying to sell it even though I could get a screaming deal buying it. Is this all just in my head, or is this for real? (And sorry to current 964 fans/owners).

why dont you just go drive one intead of getting ops on here? After you are the one thats going to be driving it. I personally like the 964s and feel they are a deal for the buck. I drove one and it made my SC seem slow

It's a combination of the way the bumpers look, the head sealing issue of the early models and the increased complexity of the 964 that has suppressed prices. They are a good value and a great driving car, but you do feel the mass.

How old are you? I'm 39. For me, the "impact bumper" 911's represented the ideal sportscar growing up - in high school and university. I have even thought of backdating a 964 with impact bumpers .. of course this would give up "originality" and result in a frankenstein.. which I don't want to do. Fortunately I love the 995, and it's the first thing I would trade up to from an 87-89 G50. MH

I agree with Vince. I have had many impact bumpers and a 964. IMO the 964 looks better. but nothing beats early 911s. I also dont believe age has anything to do with it. I'm only 22 and think early cars are the best looking 911s ever made and I certainly did not grow up with them.

I love the 964's. They have the best front end on a 911 since the 70's and overall just look like an nicely updated version of the impact bumper cars. I like them better than 993's!

I have a SC right now, and if I ever buy another 911 it will be a 964.

You're 22 and you've had many impact bumpers and a 964? Awesome! Did you start collecting cars at age 16?

So Odd how different people react, I drooled over the 964 RSA when I was right out of college. I have never liked the 993s...though they are growing on me. I think the 964s look great but I like the other models too.

With the exception of the RSA, 3.6 Turbo, Speedster and perhaps any other 964 special edition/model I have missed, I value 964 Porsches the same as the 3.2 G50 Porsches with the same mileage.

Age 18. I have had three impact bumpers including a 74S, 76s, 84 Carrera, a 356 speedster replica (it has a 911 motor in it), 1990 c4 cab, and now I think I'm settling down with early cars. I have 1 1970 right now.

As previous owner of a 1990 964 cab and now a 1987 coupe, I can give you my .02 about this subject. My cab got more attention from non-Porsche people - because it was a bright red cab. The coupe has gotten much more attention in the local Porsche community. I bought and sold the 1990 for less than $15K - I bought the 1987 for more than $15k, your price range is what i have seen here in SoCal.

the 1990 had more comfort items, power steering, 6 way seats, etc and it's 3.6L had plenty of power. When there was an oil leak that was going to cost $3k+ to fix, I could not see getting my money back. So I decided to sell.

The 1987 is more raw and I have lost a little power but the fun factor is much higher.

I have autocrossed both 1 time to get a feel of my limits driving them. They both performed great.

As for the look of each one - I liked them both.

It boils down to - buy the best car for the money you have whether it is a SC, Carrera, 964 or 993. Don't forget the PPI (I learned the hard way - remember the $3k+ oil leak)
