'77 Carrera 3.0 pricing
I'm on the fence about my '77 3.0 Carrera. I'm thinking about selling it and finding a later model C4. My question would be how do I determine value of the car. It is pretty rare in the US since they never imported them. It is a blast to drive, I'm just thinking. The car is GP White on White, sport seats, fog lights, sunroof(needs new cables). The paint would be a 7-8 out of 10. It looks good from 10 feet, but once you get closer there are some flaws. Updates include
Rebuilt original 915 with all synchros, dog teeth, etc... Engine rebuilt 30k miles ago with all updates (tensioners, pop-off, turbo valve covers, 964 cam) New fuel pump and accumulator All shift bushings and clutch cable Starter Turbo tie rods Stainless brake lines and ATE fluid 16x7 and 16x8 Fuchs Only interior flaw is a worn driver seat COA for car listing options Any input would be appreciated Here are some pictures from when I first bought the car. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by awdbandito; 03-24-2009 at 06:43 AM.. |

Nice looking car...
In my opinion the Carrera name on these cars is bit of a misnomer at this pont. In 77, all US model cars 911s were 2.7 "narrow body" cars. Except the Turbo Carrera. However in Europe, the 3.0 Carrera was also available.. the only difference being the flares, the 3.0 engine, and wider wheels. Once all the DOT, emissions details, testing ,and approvals were worked out.. the car was re-badged as the SC and exported to the US. The Carrera designation on these cars is unlike the Carrera designation on the early cars, or the 74 & 75 Euro Carrera cars. It brings no more performance than any other 78 or 79 SC. That being said, it's hard to bring these into a price-pont beyond that of an equal condition 78 or 79 SC... Just my 02 cents.. I say keep it and enjoy it.. sounds like you've done some nice stuff to it!

I saw that, but I think those are unrealistic numbers, specially in the current economic climate. I do think the car is worth more than a comprable condition SC though. I plan on keeping the car because it is a wonderful driver, I was just curious as to where it fell in the market place. I would love to replace it with a C4 or RS America though. |

In the US maybe yes but in Europe those prices are realistic IMHO. Look at i.e. www.mobile.de

It seems that you are correct. I would think that a C3 would fetch more in the states just because it is rare. I guess it all depends on who the buyer is. |

A possible explanation might be that in the US this type, being a grey import, is hard to register and/or insure in some states. Also it is simply being unknown because of this. In Europe they are more common however still rare. Valuewise I think it is a sleeper!

I think that is a very plausible explanation. I drive the car frequently and during the hot Tennessee summers Air Conditioning would be nice. That is the only reason I've thought about getting a newer 911. I'm not molesting the car by adding A/C that it wasn't shipped with. With 200hp at 2600lbs it is a fun and peppy car. Just for the driving pleasure it is worth its weight in gold to me. |

Put it on mobile.de. It will sell fast, even with a decent price tag. I don't think I've ever seen another one in white with white tombstones, sunrooof, rear wiper and pop outs. The German market is the place to advertise it.
Quite a chunk of difference between a Carrera 3 and an early SC - the C3 certainly honours the Carrera badge. I've run mine in anger against a 235bhp '75 euro Carrera and it had no trouble - 200bhp underpinned by that lovely 6 bolt crank which loves to rev and mine is fairly light. The 964 will be a bit less maintenance and probably a better regular driver, C3s are not a car you can lock up and forget for 6 months at a time. You should get a proper C3 badge on that tail if you are going to sell it - it will make a difference. ![]()

Thanks for the information John. I don't really plan on selling it anytime soon. I just got to thinking about it now the weather is starting to get warm again. A/C would be nice. I try to drive the car as often as possible, but it never sits more than 5-7 days without getting out. You are right about it being a rev happy motor. It is a little weak on the bottom end but anything from 4-7k RPM will put a smile on your face.
When you refer to "tombstones" is that in reference to the front sport seats or the rear folding seats? About the badge - I have a Carrera 3.0 badge, but the rear deck lid has never been drilled for a badge. I hate to punch holes in an undrilled deck lid. I might give in and do it, but not right this second. I've been told by a couple people that white on white is a rare combination. I too think that the C3 has more of a pedigree than a standard SC. Take care and thanks for the hard work on IB. Last edited by awdbandito; 04-01-2009 at 02:20 PM.. |

Tombstones are the front seats. Sport or regular.
That is a nice C3. A C3 is no SC. Similar yet quite different. Now....drill that decklid and put the badge on! ![]()

Hi kai from the uk...euro C3 or different then the early euroSC mainly more ponies in the engine from the early SC at 180bhp euro C3 at 200bhp euro....thinks that right!..lol..now the States 911s of the time had less power as onbooast say...but the C3 is so much rarer in euroland then any SCs!..so much more...IMO trump the early SC
