1980 SC - Compression and Leakdown

After 3 years of searching for a P car, I am very close to finalizing a deal on a 1980 SC. 108 K on the clock. Not in mint shape, but exactly the condition I like so I can drive it without worries of rock chips or parking lot dings. Car drives, handles and shifts better than any of the other P cars that I have drove - and that is the selling point for me. Plus it is reasonably close to where I live and is currently owned by a long term P car mechanic.

Only thing left to get done is to check the compression and do a leak down test.

Question for those in the know, what are considered to be acceptable or satisfactory readings for the compression and leak down?

Have seen various numbers posted on this forum over time, but wanted to see what readings are considered good and what readings I should run from. I know that for compression that all 6 cylinders should be close to each other, but not sure what they should be close to.

Thanks in advance.

jb

Personally I would not bother with a compression test. A leak down test will tell you enough to determine engine health. 3% is a very nice engine. 10% is getting close to rebuild time. I have driven cars with as much as 12% leakage that drove fine. My daily driver has 8-10% and runs fine. Consistancy across the cylinders is important.

Search the main forum for "leakdown" or "compression test" and you will have many pages to read.

Thanks for the reply.

Looks like I will proceed with the purchase. Compression ranged from 140-150 across all 6 and the Leakdown ranged from 2% - 6% across all 6.

Hopefully this weekend I can get it and get it out on the highway.

Most of the 'regular' upgrades have been done, except the pop-off valve. Is this a big chore? Is it a DIY item for someone with limited mechanical abilities?

Cam lobes? OK, new one on me. Did not know that they were an issue.

Head studs I did not check on - yet! Thanks, forgot about them.
