One big item left off the Wiki is hydraulic valve lash adjustment in the 993 engine.

"The Carrera represented the "base model" of the 993, and was available in rear and all-wheel drive versions. It was equipped with the naturally aspirated 3.6 liter M64 engine, further developed from the 964 and combined with a new dual-flow exhaust system now incorporating two catalytic converters."

Not much detail............

993's have the hydraulic valves and a more efficient exhaust system.

There were some differences during the production of each engine, some 964's had plastic intakes and some aluminum. The later 964's also had an updated solution for the head gasket.

'95 993's are OBDI and '96 and later are OBDII and have the secondary air injection, which has it's own issues. Varioram came along in '97 or '98?

If you're thinking swap, then go varioram for the most oohs and aahs when you pop the lid. Ultimately though, the condition of the individual engine is probably more important than whether it's from a 964 or 993.

IMO, a free breathing 3.2, short gearing and a good driver can run with the 3.6 swaps.

Having owned a pre-Varioram 993 and a Varioram 993, I can tell you the seat of my pants couldn't tell the difference. But both were in stock 3,000 lb cars... If I were installing a 3.6 in an early chassis (projecting here) I'd go for the Varioram variant.
